Dear Friends,
We post this with both sadness and joy. After much research, thought, discussion, and prayer, it is time to close Catholic Youth Ministry Center at Morgan Park High School more commonly known as The Blue House.
The impact of the pandemic was felt by many youth programs as we all struggled to recruit and interest young people in programs before and after the Covid shut-down. As you know, there are now a multitude of programs, organizations, and extracurricular activities available for our young people which offer quality programs in a variety of areas we cannot. The student participation in our programs during the last two years has decreased dramatically. Despite our efforts to change, transform, adapt, and refocus our programs, it has become clear that this model is no longer meeting the needs or interests of young people in a post-Covid world.
This realization, coupled with the impending retirement of the Blue House Director, resulted in the unanimous decision by the Board of Directors to close our doors at the end of this school year. As stewards of the generosity of others, we have always been committed to spending donations wisely. It is no longer fiscally responsible to maintain our programs and the needs of the house.
We are sad to end our work with young people but are joyful in the knowledge that The Blue House provided direction to thousands of MPHS students since 1979. We are sad to leave a community of supporters who helped us in hundreds of ways but joyful to have known such generosity. We are sad to say goodbye to our staff with a combined 79 years of service but joyful to know they are people who will prosper and grow wherever they go.
In the next few months we will host two parties: an Open House at the Center for those who want “one last look around” and a Thank You to all who have kept the Blue House alive. Invitations will be sent ASAP. Please let us know if you would like to join us in celebrating! In the words of the very wise Winnie-the-Pooh, “Don’t be sad it’s over, be happy it happened.”

LOOKING FOR A JOB? WANT TO WORK WITH YOUNG PEOPLE IN A LAID-BACK, FUN ENVIRONMENT?

We are still looking for a PROGRAM DIRECTOR (all school days 10AM to 5PM) and/or a YOUTH WORKER (all school days 2PM to 5PM). YOUTH WORKER position is great for a college student who has afternoons free. Great experience for someone who plans to work with young people as a teacher, mentor, counselor, etc.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR (FULL-TIME POSITION)
Beginning August 15, 2022

The Catholic Youth Ministry Center, also known at The Blue House, is located across the street from the campus of Morgan Park High School (MPHS). MPHS is a Chicago Public High School with 1,100 students in grades 7 – 12. The Blue House provides a supervised setting for MPHS students after school, offering social, educational, reflection and leadership opportunities every school day. The Program Director will join a small team (3) of dedicated professionals whose passion for young people drives the programs and activities at the Blue House.

Duties and responsibilities
Supervised by the Executive Director, the Program Director will manage all operations according to established best practices for Out of School Time (OST) Programs.
These operations include:
• Coordinating the on-going recruitment of Morgan Park High School students.
• Supervising and mentoring of both high school and junior high students in our after school program.
• Planning and implementing workshops, community projects, programs and activities in collaboration with staff and student members. Programs must align with requirements of granting entities.
• Documenting all program activities as required, with timely submission of program reports and records.
• Creating and maintaining a Blue House social media presence, including regular updates to the Blue House website.
• Attending workshops, trainings, meetings and conferences as assigned.
• Actively contributing to and participating in supervision, staff meetings and fundraising events.
• Networking with Morgan Park High School administration, staff and partner programs.
• Seeking out funding and grant applications and create, organize and submit any potential grants in a timely manner to assure receipt by deadline.
• Work with the Executive Director to develop and maintain budget and expenses.
• With Executive Director, report on a quarterly basis to the Board of Directors of the Catholic Youth Ministry Center regarding programs and administration of the Center.

Qualifications
• Bachelors in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or related field
• Cooperative team player
• Motivated self-starter
• Strong communication skills
• Conscientious about attendance
• Must pass pre-employment State and Federal fingerprint criminal background checks
