Dr. Chee, a marine ecologist from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), visited Tongyeong, a coastal city in South Korea, for an academic exchange. She found that Tongyeong has similar geography to Penang, but the people there are much more aware of marine conservation. They care for the sea in their daily lives, something that is not yet common in Penang.

As Penang faces problems like coastal development, land reclamation, and marine pollution, Dr. Chee believes that Tongyeong’s experience can be a useful example for Penang to learn from.

It is encouraging to know that the proposed rehabilitation of the Jelutong landfill site (90 acres) will be carried out. However, it is deeply concerning that this may come with an additional 70-acre land reclamation project right in front of the Middle Bank seagrass bed—a critical marine ecosystem.

Seagrass beds play a vital role in coastal protection, carbon sequestration, and marine biodiversity. Reclamation nearby this sensitive area could have irreversible impacts.
