The Merton School Sport Partnership hosted their Inclusive Cross Country Festival at Morden Recreational Ground on Friday 29th September 2017. 17 primary schools took part in the festival that included four race categories: year 3/4 girls, year 3/4 boys, year 5/6 girls and lastly year 5/6 boys. All the racers paced themselves over the 1200m course.

After a wet morning, luckily it cleared up just as the first schools started to arrive, this brightening the mood and atmosphere for all of the schools competing. As the year 3/4 girls stepped up to the line each school cheered on their teammates, the team spirit was fantastic throughout. The atmosphere that was generated spurred on the runners as they all put in 100% effort to complete each race. There was a lot of promising talent on display. This was demonstrated from those runners who paced themselves to the final 50m to then give themselves a sprint finish across the line.

Thank you to all the schools that took part in this great event. The winner of our Refspect award today was Miriam from Bond Primary School. She demonstrated an incredibly generous and selfless sporting performance by taking the hand of another participant who found it difficult to run the course and walked her round until she could continue on her own. Well done Miriam, you are a credit to your school.

The partnership would now like to encourage all runners to continue their hard work and hope to see them competing in the 2018 Challenge Run’s which take place on 23rd March.

Schools Entered: Abbotsbury, Aragon, Bishop Gilpin, Bond, Dundonald, Liberty, Links, Perseid, Poplar, Sacred Heart, Singlegate, St John Fisher, St Marys, St Matthew’s, St Peter’s & St Paul’s, The Priory and William Morris.

The MSSP Year 3 & 4 Challenge Run took place at Joseph Hood Recreation Ground on Thursday 20 April 2017, and this year’s event was greeted with another fantastic turn out. 32 schools from across the Borough of Merton took part, with the majority of schools bringing both a year 3 and a year 4 team. This meant that over 200 children competed in each of the four races. While it was evident that the majority of children’s motivation to compete was to test themselves on the energy sapping two lap circuit, there were those individuals however who were looking to win their race an attain a medal.

Year 3 was the first year group to make their way onto the circuit. Both the girls and the boy’s races were a tense affair with not much separating the leaders from the rest of the pack who were hot on their heels in pursuit. It was only on the last lap of each race that the front runners were able to gain some distance between themselves and the rest of the pack. A sprint finish therefore ensued for those children wanting to achieve a top 10 placing. In the girls race the battle for first place was fiercely contested by two runners from Hollymount and St John Fisher and in the Year 3 boy’s race, there was a three way battle for first place between St Matthew’s, Hollymount and Wimbledon Chase. A special mention must also be given to all spectating children and the large crowd of on looking parents and teachers. Together, everyone helped to create an electrifying atmosphere for all of the racers.

The Year 4 race was equally as impressive with both the boys and the girl’s race displaying some fantastic athleticism form all runners. The race winners in both of the races took an early lead from the start line and controlled the pace of the race through two laps all the way to the finish line. The second and third place finishers in each race were also not far behind but could not quite match the pace of the front-runners.

The MSSP Year 5 & 6 Challenge Run took place at Joseph Hood Recreation Ground on Thursday 30th March 2017. We were lucky enough to enjoy a sunny day with a refreshing breeze; ideal conditions for running.

A fantastic number of schools took part in the event this year. 24 schools in total competed at the event meaning there was a maximum of 168 students running in each race and over 330 children took part overall! Seven boys and seven girls from Year 5 and from Year 6 entered; the Year 6's running for individual and team honors while the Year 5's were racing for personal glory.

The Year 6 runners were the first to run and it was really great to see everyone giving it their all throughout the race. Both the boys’ and girls’ races were incredibly close with many runners coming in one after another, while all runners were cheered on from the side lines by school-mates, teachers and parents. The Year 6 results were then submitted to be compared and ordered.

Meanwhile, the two Year 5 races were run in the same manner with all competitors trying their absolute best right up until the finishing line.

For the Year 6 team races, the top five runners in each team counted towards the schools’ total and, therefore, their overall position. It was evident to see that each individual ran their hardest to do the best they could for their team.

Congratulations to everyone who took part; the effort, determination and perseverance on display from all of the athletes was outstanding!

Thank you to Sue Taylor and her team from Links Primary School for organising the event, and to Rutlish School for providing the leaders. Finally, thank you to all schools for bringing your teams and to all the spectators who came to cheer on the athletes.

The Merton Inclusive Football Festival was held at Tooting and Mitcham Football Club on Thursday 16th March 2017. The festival was attended by pupils from 24 schools from around the borough, it was safe to say that everyone was very excited upon arrival.

Despite the event being non-competitive, all teams showed great determination and a large range of football skills throughout the day. There was some outstanding goals scored and some heroic goalkeeping displays.

The fixtures were played in an excellent spirit and it was great to see participants supporting not only their own teammates but also members of opposing teams. With no pressure to qualify, it was great to see every participant play with a smile on their face throughout the day. Schools must be credited on the level of sportsmanship that was on display. This was evident with the wide range of schools that were nominated for the REFSPECT award.

The overall REFSPECT winners were Gorringe Park and Sacred Heart. However, a special mention must go to Callum from Cricket Green, who was nominated for his excellent attitude and brilliant goalkeeping display, Rosa from Links who was nominated for encouraging students from other schools and to Ashley from The Sherwood for being respectful, friendly, helping everyone and never giving up.

A huge thank you must go to Tooting and Mitcham Football Club for letting us use their fantastic facilities for the day. A second thank you must go to the sports leaders from Harris Academy Morden and the referees and coaches from Fulham who supported the event brilliantly.

The Merton School Sport Partnership held their annual Borough Boccia Competition on Friday 10th March 2017 at Canons Leisure Centre. Twenty five special and mainstream schools took part in the event which is the highest attended Boccia event the Partnership has staged yet. Teams were split into three leagues and played a round robin format over eight pitches. Boccia is an inclusive Paralympic event that can be played by all ages, abilities and disabilities. The aim of the game is to propel your ball nearest to the ‘Jack’ ball to win.

The day consisted of lots of games for all the teams and the children taking part were really enthusiastic and positive which gave the event a buzzing atmosphere. It was evident that teams had been practising as there was some great team tactics played. All the teams showed great sportsmanship towards their peers and opponent’s: Cricket Green won the Partnership’s Refspect Award for their positive attitude on and off the court.

At the end of the event the Mayor of Merton, Councillor Brenda Fraser presented all the teams with their medals and certificates. A big thank you to the Harris Academy Morden sports leaders for officiating all the matches. They were excellent and a credit to their school. Thank you to all the schools that attended, we hope the children had a fantastic day and we hope to see them back again at next year’s event.

The Morden Cluster held its Year 5/6 B Team Football Competition on Wednesday 8th March 2017 at Harris Academy Morden. Seven teams took part in this round robin event, meaning there were plenty of games for each team. All the teams arrived looking the part in their kits, with smiles on their faces showing they were raring to go. Throughout the competition, teams were very organised and ready on their pitch which made the competition flow nicely.

The standard of football was great with some excellent sportsmanship demonstrated across all the teams. Most teams were nominated for our Refspect Award but Morden Primary won the Award with the majority vote for helping up injured players and shaking hands with all opponents.

Well done to all the teams that took part in the event. Every team put in 100% effort with the teachers on the side-lines cheering on their team. Thank you to the Harris Academy Morden Sports leaders for refereeing all the games, they did a great job. The main emphasis of the competition was to get more young people playing football for their school and having fun, however scores were recorded, congratulations to St Peter & St Paul for winning the competition after winning all their games!
