Yesterday we had our second annual cleanup of the San Gabriel River, joined by - this year resulted in just over 60 volunteers joining us and together, we all diverted a total of 3,340lbs from our waterways, quadrupling our turnout and results from last year!

From our Executive Committee member Leslie Garcia who organized the cleanup:

“Witnessing community members quite literally roll up their sleeves and fully commit to the cause in such great numbers was inspiring. Volunteers could be seen in any direction you turned and we had no shortage of waste to go around!

As a team, we are incredibly proud to deliver this event for a second year in a row and truly aim to scale it in every year to follow. We invite additional organizations who may share our values to reach out and join in on the fun.”

Thank you to everyone who was part of our efforts - we couldn’t have done it without you!

Join us on June 1 for our 2nd annual cleanup of the San Gabriel River, this time with !

Your participation will not only divert trash from our oceans but also bring much-needed awareness to the sea turtle habitat now thriving along the river. Together, we can make a significant impact in keeping our waterways clean and healthy for everyone to enjoy!

Please note that minors should be accompanied by parental supervision, and that this event will not involve any underwater/PADI coverage and remain exclusively on land.

Parking off the Willow entry is limited and recommend ride sharing there and/or carpooling. Stay tuned for more specifics regarding location as the event gets closer!

Victory! 🎉 California Bans All Plastic Bags In Stores, Fully Effective Starting In 2026

The Surfrider Foundation is pleased to celebrate a new law, SB 1053 signed by Gov. Gavin Newson, further banning all plastic bags statewide. While plastic bag bans were first signed into effect back in 2014, this new measure closes loopholes - shoppers have still been able to purchase bags made of thicker plastic that were seemingly recyclable.

The ban started rolling out this past January, and stores are now only able to offer recycled paper bags or compostable bags that meet specific criteria. Starting in 2026, only recycled paper bags can be distributed to consumers.

This is a great next step for the plastics crisis, and we encourage you to further your environmental impact by using reusable bags whenever possible!
