The crucial unpaid care provided by women underpins our economy, saving billions across health, social care and other public services.

Working alongside Engender (Scotland) and the Coalition of Carers In Scotland, we’ve been exploring how unpaid caring is experienced by women across Scotland. The Carers Census shows that women make up nearly three-quarters (73%) of unpaid carers - highlighting how deeply rooted assumptions about gender roles continue to shape who provides care.

Through this work, women shared how caring responsibilities have led them to give up paid work altogether or significantly reduce their hours. Many also described the challenges of staying in or returning to work, including inflexible workplaces, limited childcare and adult social care support, and ongoing expectations that they will take on caring roles.

We’ll be sharing more insights soon in our joint report with Engender and the Coalition of Carers in Scotland, looking at how unpaid caring is impacting women’s lives and financial security - particularly in the context of the rising cost of living.

💸 Carer’s Allowance is just £86.45 per week. This is no way near enough. We revisit this quote from a carer involved in our campaign.
