Northern Arizona Audubon Society

Northern Arizona Audubon Society Northern Arizona Audubon Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to engaging people in appreciating and protecting birds and their habitats.

We’ve been the voice for birds in Northern Arizona since 1972. The Northern Arizona Audubon Society is dedicated to sharing our love of birds, wildlife and their habitats to all members of the Flagstaff and Verde Valley communities. Founded in 1973 as a chapter of the National Audubon Society, Northern Arizona Audubon is an all-volunteer non-profit engaging people in the enjoyment and conservation

of birds and their habitats in the northern part of the state. We involve people through fun birding field trips, monthly programs, educational outreach and various opportunities for the community to collaboratively help preserve our regional environment. As part of our activities we also hold monthly meetings in both Flagstaff and Sedona, which feature a wide variety of speakers talking about birds and other natural history topics. All of our meetings are free and open to the public. We welcome everyone to join us, especially those who are new to birds or our area. We are a friendly and fun group of folks who love to share the natural wonders of northern Arizona. Northern Arizona Audubon is a fully independent 501 (c)3 non-profit organization. Taxpayer ID Number – 31-1742628

The Summer Tanager shows up in Northern Arizona like it’s been dipped in sunlight—males are an unapologetic, all-red flash in the treetops that feels almost unreal against the green forest. Even wilder: they specialize in eating bees and wasps, catching them mid-air and somehow removing the stinger before swallowing like it’s no big deal.

Birders spend a surprising amount of time having completely serious conversations about birds with extremely unserious names.

But that’s part of the joy of birding—you never run out of things that make you pause, laugh, and ask “wait… that’s real?”

What’s your favorite weird bird name?

Bird Walk Report | Wilson Meadow

Saturday’s bird walk at Wilson Meadow brought 11 birders out to enjoy cool mountain air, beautiful scenery, and an early burst of summer bird activity. The group quickly tallied 20 species, with the meadow proving to be wonderfully birdy right from the start.

About 40 minutes in, Mother Nature decided to add her own feature to the walk with a well-timed (and very thorough) summer rain shower—reminding us that a little weather is just part of the adventure.

Birds remind us to slow down, pay attention, and find wonder in the everyday.

What's a bird that always brings you joy when you see it?

What if birders were in charge of city planning, some street names might look a little different. 🐦

Like this one in Village of Oak Creek, Sedona AZ
🚧 Yellow Hat Cir → Yellow-breasted Chat Cir

Just an idea to help improve navigation for the birds.
What street in Northern Arizona should we rename next?

Bird Walk Report | Jail Trail, June 5

Summer had arrived on June 5th and it was hot, but that didn't stop the birds. I was joined by folks on the Jail Trail to go find some birds, and we did!! We heard birds singing and calling and we saw birds gathering nesting material and carrying food. Lots of birds were singing like the Bewick's Wren and Common Yellowthroat including great looks at these birds, too. There were so many Anna's and Black-chinned Hummingbirds all over the place. We saw fabulous Brown-crested Flycatchers and many Yellow-breasted Chats. The Summer Tanagers were showing up on every trail and we saw several Blue Grosbeaks. A few highlights were an Abert's Towhee displaying territorial behavior, a Willow Flycatcher constantly calling, and we had great looks as well. The best sighting was four recently fledged Black Phoebes all bunched next to each other perched on a branch while Mom gathered food for them. We ended with 35 species. I hope to see you on the birding trail.
