RE: REASONS FOR THE PROTESTS IN AKODO TOWN AND CALL FOR URGENT INTERVENTION
We write to formally explain the reasons behind the ongoing protests in Akodo Town and to respectfully call on the Lagos State Government and the Local Government Authority to urgently intervene before the situation escalates.
The protest in Akodo Town is not about fighting or violence. It is about the imposition of a king who is not ready to comply with the collective decision, customs, and ancestral processes of Akodo Town.
As the Yoruba proverb says:
“Ilá kì í gaju oníré lọ” — meaning the community is greater than any individual ruler. In Akodo, the town supersedes the king.
However, to our surprise and disappointment, the government has continued to recognize and crown a king imposed without the consent of the town, contrary to our traditions and ancestral processes. If the process had truly involved the town, such resistance would not exist, because the chosen king would have followed due traditional procedures before being crowned.
Despite repeated concerns raised by the people, the government has yet to provide a lasting solution. Instead, government officials continue to publicly relate with and recognize this individual as king,
Akodo Town is currently silently boiling.
The people are unhappy and deeply troubled by this situation. We strongly emphasize that we do not want violence. However, the continued neglect of this issue and the refusal to address the root cause may unintentionally push the town toward unrest—something we are earnestly trying to avoid.
Furthermore, we have seen disturbing public statements and posts claiming that all Akodo lands belong to a single family, that the crown declaration remains restricted to only that family and the town took to the court to acquired the land of Akodo Town
These claims are strongly opposed by the people of Akodo and go against our historical and communal heritage.
We therefore humbly but firmly appeal to the Lagos State Government and the Local Government Authority to intervene immediately, engage all stakeholders, respect the will of the people, and resolve this matter peacefully before it worsens.
Akodo Town remains Akodo Town. We seek peace, justice, and respect for our traditions.
Thank you for your attention and anticipated swift action.
Yours faithfully,
