I've had a LOT of people talking to me lately about s*x trafficking. And they ask the same questions (which is understandable). So... here's the answers I give:
Yes, it's real. Yes, it's horrible. Yes you can do something. But, you have to be brave, stand firm, and be a grown up.
1) Monitor ALL of your children's actions online - children do NOT deserve adult-level privacy. In fact, predators are counting on you to give them such privacy. Don't.
2) No screens in kids' or teens' rooms. None. No tablet. No phone. Nothing with internet. You have an old DVD player and a small TV? Ok. But no internet. Believe me, nothing good happens online after bedtime. AND, tablets and phones are cameras that predators use to take pictures when your kids don't know (happens way more than you think). In addition, it's pure temptation... and once your kid sends a picture they regret, it's forever in the hands of someone else who can post it whenever they want to whomever they want. That's when extortion, s*xploitation, and abuse begins on one end and depression, shame, fear, and potential suicidality happen on the other. No internet in rooms. Period.
3) Don't look at p**n. Even if your an adult. It is directly linked to trafficking kids and adults. There is ZERO way to avoid it. This industry wants you addicted and makes BILLIONS off of people being trafficked. Plus, p**n almost every single p**nography video shows either (or all) of the following: violence, racism, s*xism, s*xual aggression, s*xualization, negative stereotypes, and a variety of situations where marginalized or vulnerable people are abused or taken advantage of. So... in addition to participating in human trafficking, kids and adults learn to expect violent and abusive behaviors in relationships. P**n is garbage. You AND your kids deserve healthy relationships - p**n represents the opposite.
I hope this helps you. The below article is a great start to learning more.
Let's stop human trafficking by protecting one household at a time.
S*x trafficking shares a variety of symbiotic connections to p**nography, and it happens more often than most people think.
