Yesterday, we shadowed Emma during a home visit with one of our clients, where she carried out a holistic Living Well assessment.

Age UK Merton’s Living Well service supports older people to stay safe, independent and well at home. During the visit, Emma explored the client’s overall wellbeing, health, mobility, home safety, finances, transport, social interests, and support needs. This included discussing activities such as Singing for Fun and crafts, support with decluttering and cleaning, possible home adaptations, Blue Badge and Taxi card options, and benefit checks to make sure the client is not missing out on extra financial support. Emma also carried out home safety checks, including checking the carbon monoxide detectors and noting down emergency contacts.

What stood out most was Emma’s empathy and excellent communication skills. She made the client feel heard, answered questions with patience and care, and built a warm rapport throughout the visit.

Emma also explained confidentiality, consent, referrals, waiting times and next steps clearly, helping the client feel informed, respected and in control of the support they receive.

At the end of the visit, Emma asked: “Is there anything else you need help with that we haven’t already covered?”

That simple question reflects what Living Well is all about: taking the time to listen, understand and support older people to live safely, independently, and confidently at home.

Carers Week is a chance to recognise and celebrate the vital role unpaid carers play in supporting families and communities across the UK. It also raises awareness of the challenges carers face and helps people understand when they may be taking on a caring role themselves.

The theme for Carers Week 2026 is Building Carer Friendly Communities, focusing on how communities can better understand, support, recognise and empower carers.

Together, we can help create communities where carers feel valued, supported and seen.

AMELIA

Amelia is a befriending volunteer at Age UK Merton. She has been volunteering for nine months, meeting weekly with an older person for a regular chat. Although she has only been in the role for under a year, she says the connection feels much longer because of the genuine friendship they have built.

Amelia was drawn to volunteering during a personal turning point, when she wanted to reconnect with people outside of her usual circle and do something meaningful with her time. While she hoped to support someone who might be craving connection, she also found connection, wisdom and perspective for herself.

For Amelia, befriending is not only about reducing loneliness for an older person. It is a mutual relationship that brings perspective, routine and comfort to both people. She describes the weekly chats as a genuine friendship that anchors the week, where they share life updates, reflect on family, talk about how life has changed, and learn from each other’s experiences.

She describes her volunteering experience at Age UK Merton as “grounding”. It has helped her step outside of her own world and reflect on resilience, modern life, kindness and the importance of being truly present.

One memory that has stayed with her is bringing back a small lucky charm and solar-powered waving cat after a trip to Japan. The person she befriends was delighted, saying it reminded her of a cat she had when she was younger. For Amelia, this was a lovely reminder of the joy found in small things and the vividness of someone’s spirit, even in later life.

Amelia's message to anyone thinking about volunteering is simple: “Don’t hesitate - you will not regret it. Whether you want to support others or find a sense of purpose within yourself, volunteering like this can be a transformative experience.”

SIAN

Sian is an Activities volunteer at Age UK Merton. She helps to set up tables, chairs, drinks and activities for clients attending various classes and sessions. She supports Monday activities such as bingo, dominoes and Scrabble, as well as Tuesday arts and crafts sessions, where she helps clients join in and enjoy the activities.

Sian started volunteering because she has always seen herself as a caring person and wanted to give back, while also doing something meaningful with her time. Since joining, she says the staff have been lovely, the clients have been amazing, and she has felt welcomed from the start.

For Sian, the best part of volunteering is socialising with clients and knowing that they have someone to talk to, whether they are having a good day or a bad day. She enjoys seeing smiles on their faces and watching them take part in activities that bring them joy.

One memory that has stayed with her is seeing clients dancing and singing together, with staff joining in too. She described it as a lovely feeling and said it showed her that everyone is welcome at Age UK Merton.

Sian says volunteering has shown her the value of teamwork, care and creating a welcoming environment. Her message to anyone thinking about volunteering is simple: “Why are you still waiting? The place is absolutely lovely, and you would enjoy your time here with the staff and with the clients. You would feel welcome.”

CHRISTINA

Christina is a telephone befriender who calls an older person once a week for a long, meaningful chat. She describes the role as one of her favourite things to do, because it gives both her and the person she supports a sense of connection, friendship and routine.

She started volunteering during Covid because she felt helpless and wanted to do something useful. At first, she supported people with befriending and shopping, and one of those relationships has continued beyond the pandemic.

For Christina, volunteering is not just about helping someone who is lonely. It is about genuine friendship, listening without judgement, being a trusted person outside someone’s immediate family, and learning from older people’s life experiences. She says the role has helped her understand that loneliness looks different for everyone, and that older people should not be reduced to stereotypes.

She also feels volunteering has benefited her own wellbeing. She describes it as a reciprocal experience, something that has improved her mental health, kept her brain active and helped her appreciate the value of regularly checking in on people.
