Gentle and Dainty... the play style we all adore for big time confidence building in dogs and humans alike.

This is soft play.
It's giving tea party energy.
Minimal physical contact.
Stop. Start. Stop.

A play style that may look simple, but that doesn't mean it is any less beneficial for the dogs in this yard.
They're just communicating at a softer volume.

Here's to the gentle souls of the canine world.

Ever watched a wrestling match where no one truly keeps score?

This is Rough and Rowdy… let’s get ready to rumbleeee!!

We adore these athletic pups who not only excel at wrestling and grappling but also know how to communicate while they chase and tumble.

You’ll definitely want to be in the front row for this action-packed, contact-filled play style. Dogs meeting right in the middle of it and sorting things out just fine.

It’s fast. It’s physical. It’s expressive.
Big energy. Big play. We are all in!

Every playgroup can have:

the rough+ rowdy wrestlers
the gentle+ dainty party
the push+ pull crew
the seek+ destroy besties

Different play styles.
Same goal: healthy, appropriate social behavior.

When we learn to recognize play styles, we can create better matches, safer interactions, and more successful dogs.

Because good play grouping isn't random.
Its reading the dogs.

Not all playgroups are created equal!

Different styles, different communication, and different needs.

But all good play has one thing in common: it's own specific playstyle 🐾

DPFL has identified four major playstyles to help us look beyond "they're playing" and actually understand how dogs are interacting with each other.

Who likes chase?
Who likes contact?
Who needs pauses?
Who thrives with movement?
Who prefers softer social time?

Because successful playgroups are not about throwing dogs together and hoping for the best. They're about observing. Making thoughtful groups. And giving dogs the space to be themselves safely.

Every dog deserves play that makes sense for them.

Dogs live to play.
Now let them play to live!

Have you ever met a dog like Preo in your shelter?

A dog presenting as fractious. Reactive. Hard to get out of the kennel.

Not bad. Just overwhelmed and stressed by her kennel environment.

The dogs who need kennel breaks the most are often the ones caregivers pause and think twice about. And that hesitation is completely understandable. But it means dogs like Preo get left behind and their behavioral deterioration continues.

If you work with dogs like Preo and want to safely help them before they lose it, this one is for you.

Handling Fractious Dogs in the Shelter Setting will cover body language, internal motivations, risk assessment, safer handling techniques, and more; helping you help dogs like Preo get a real chance at quality of life and a way out. 🐾

Some dogs who are overwhelmed in the shelter may present as fractious which can limit their opportunities to get out of their kennels. Why? Because caregivers become understandably cautious.

This webinar is for those moments that feel tense or unpredictable and handling requires a higher level of training and experience and less guesswork.

We’ll cover body language, identifying internal motivations, how to assess what level of risk a struggling dog might pose, safer handling techniques, and much more!

Dogs experiencing higher levels of stress in care need time out of their kennels even more than most. Unfortunately, they are often the ones who are bypassed because they can present as harder to safely navigate.

If you work with dogs who are deteriorating in care and you're trying to help them before they lose it, this webinar is for you!

Can we get an AMEN?!

Not managing dogs. Training them.
Not surviving the shift. Improving it.

Every dog deserves someone who sees them as an individual.

Dogs live to play, now let them play to live!
HALLELUJAH.

In a shelter setting, dogs are often overwhelmed, unsure, and trying to stay safe. And who could blame them?

Behaviors associated with “stranger danger” are often misunderstood as stubbornness, shutdown, or aggression… when in reality, many of these dogs simply have not been taught that new people can be predictable, safe, and worth engaging with.

Through confidence building, communication, choice, and skill development, wary dogs can learn how to navigate human interaction successfully and even enjoy meeting potential adopters.

AI is going to take our job?! We'd love to see it! 😂

There's no end to the list of tasks the robots will never be able to take from us or you! Every day we strive to pass the knowledge and skills that are now second nature to our fellow handlers, trainers, and caretakers.

Can an algorithm read a dog's body language? Redirect a spinning, overstimulated dog back to calm? Know exactly when to step in and when to let two dogs work it out? Feel the moment a shut-down dog finally chooses to play?
Yeah... We didn't think so!

The work we do lives in our hands, our instincts, and our hearts. It is built in playgroups, in kennels, in the quiet moments after a long shift when you know you made a difference to the dogs and the people around you.

No prompt can teach that.
No model can feel that.
This is human work. And we are honored to do it.
