World Fish Migration Day This World Fish Migration Day (May 25, 2024) we celebrate existing and renewed free-flowing rivers. These fish need free migration routes in order to survive.

With the World Fish Migration Day 2022 we want to raise global attention for endangered migratory fish, like salmon, sturgeon, giant catfish, dourado and eel. Migratory fish are particularly threatened by barriers such as weirs, dams and sluices, built for water management, hydropower and land drainage. Water managers, fishery organizations and NGO's are restoring fish migration routes in rivers a

nd between rivers and seas. Dams removed, sluices are managed fish friendly and fishway are built to help fish on their journey. During this fifth World Fish Migration Day the participating organizations will open their doors for the public and will show fish and fishways and host activities for children and parents. The event will take place on the 21th of May, 2022 and is supported by WWF, The Nature Conservancy and Freshwater Fish Specialist Group. We are aiming for more than 3000 participating local, regional and national organizations.

Los peces que viajan! 🧳🐟👇🏽

Happy !

Rivers have always been connecting us, just like they connect fish. When we protect a free-flowing river, we protect not just the fish, we protect everyone. We are connected to fish, rivers and each other. We are culturally and spiritually connected. We are river people.

Tell us how you're celebrating in the comments!

Since 1970, freshwater species populations have declined by 85% globally. 🚨

Faster than any other ecosystem.

In Australia, migratory fish like the Silver perch are among the most vulnerable. 🌡️

These fish rely on free-flowing rivers to migrate, feed and reproduce. But when rivers are blocked or degraded, those journeys become impossible.

Fish are the lifeblood of healthy rivers — supporting entire ecosystems and the wildlife that depends on them. 🧬

We work to restore river connectivity by supporting campaigns, advocating for healthy waterways, and delivering habitat restoration and fish hotels that help native fish recover.

Today is International World Fish Migration Day, a reminder that rivers are pathways for life, and when they flow freely, life can move with them.
