A huge shout out to Kelly+Partners Chartered Accountants, who not only helped to set up SIm’s Cambodia as a registered Not-For-Profit over 10 years ago, but every year review our books to ensure compliance. Thank you Amanda Gascoigne and Ryan Threlfo for your support over the years. You help to keep our work in Cambodia going. Much appreciated!

Not long now till we head off to visit our projects in Cambodia and deliver a range of services to our valued communities.

With a physiotherapist, a nurse, a sexual health educator and willing hands, we will visit Kla Kamum, Kon Seng and Makak as well as checking out other NGO’s such as Heartprints, Human and Hope, Build A Better Future Today and a fan favourite, Apopo Hero Rats.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our work either by donation, providing knitted goods, cans and bottles for recycling, computer gear, brand new school uniforms or sports equipment. Thank you to the Rotary Clubs of East Maitland and Kurri Kurri for your support with our fundraising and The George Tavern Greenhills for the cans and bottles which allows us to purchase much needed supplies over there.

Our participation in RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) has opened new opportunities for SIM’s with networking and support.

YOU ALL MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO LIVES IN CAMBODIA.

Rotarians from the Rotary Club of East Maitland were hard at work today in Cambodia. Geoff and Judy Hicks visited the little village of Kon Seng about an hour out of Siem Reap, with Brian and Sue Morgan (SIM’s Cambodia Inc). Geoff, Sue and Tiara, our project manager, repainted our concrete designs started last month with Rotarian Erin Marney, and we’ll add the numbers on Friday.

Judy was busy handing out thongs to help prevent hook worm, Days for Girls packs and knitted dolls. She also delivered supplies to Dr Pholla for his new clinic.

Brian was keen to get in front of the class and teach. He had at least 46 eager students reciting their lessons. There was lots of laughter.

Geoff and Judy also brought elastic to teach Sochea the age old games of elastics as well as bubbles that were a huge hit.

Our job list for next year continues to grow as the beautiful wooden furniture purchased with the Rotary Foundation District 9670 Grants will need revarnishing by then.

We loved our visit today and look forward to coming back on Friday after a visit to another new school for SIM’s Cambodia Inc, which is run by Nak Chan.

A huge and heartfelt thank you to those who are busy working behind the scenes for SIM’s Cambodia and our Hands of Hope recycling prigram.

Brian Coffey, Keith Bush and Stuart Holle have kept our cans and bottles recycling up to date making a difference immediately in Cambodia. The maintenance undertaken this week has been funded through this initiative.

Please contact one of those amazing people or drop cans and bottles to our Ashtonfield house near the bins if you have any cans or bottles for recycling. Thank you to those who continue to contribute and a special thanks to The George Tavern for their recycling.

Some people have indicated that they’d like to make a personal donation (tax deductible) to support our work here. The details are:

Below is a post that I just put up on the Rotary Club of East Maitland’s FB page.

With the “A” Team in action today Geoff and Judy Hicks loaded the van and we headed up to Kulen Mountain and into the village of Kla Kamum which has received Rotary Foundation District 9670 Grants. We were busy handing out sleeping mats and blankets, as well as knitted goods for the little ones present.

Judy set up provisions for the new mums and pregnant ladies ensuring some special little touches for their exciting new times. Blood pressure was checked and all passed with flying colours.

Sue ran the Days For Girls program with the teenaged students and mums of absent teenage girls. They were very grateful to receive support that will ensure they can get to school every day of the month.

Brian and Geoff soon set about attending to maintenance issues by painting the toilet doors built through the Rotary District Grant.

Judy, Geoff and Sue then headed up to the primary school to check out our Library, then headed back to continue painting.

After farewells to our beautiful community at Kla Kamum and requests for more toilets, we headed back to Along Thom to attend to maintenance issues noted last week at the Preschool. We stabilised the joins on the new Lino, cut off rotten timber legs and put bricks in place before looking up and noticing that we’d been invaded by termites. Some serious discussions took place on the best way to address the issue. Immediate spraying and removal of infected timber is needed, so quotes are being sought, but a longer term solution will require further consultation. This, we realise, is the down side to a 3 year covid absence.

After having that working bee cut short, we headed to the waterfall where the week before, we noticed a family of 8 young children in dire need of new clothing. Geoff and Judy had brought along some great items that were just perfect for the family.

We’ve had a huge but very rewarding day and give thanks for the support we receive that enables this valuable work to continue. We have lots of planning underway for the next trip in Jan ‘24.

Having the most amazing start to our first visit in three years. Thanks to the Upper Blue Mountains Sunrise Rotary Club we were able to deliver a computer to Tiarith. Many thanks to Erin Marney for taking Tiarith through the steps to using the laptop.

Our next visit was to the markets to replace Tiarith’s bike that broke a few days ago. Thanks to the Rotary Club of East Maitland’s recycling program, we were able to ensure that Tiarith gets to afternoon school safely. RCEM have also purchased 85 mosquito nets to take to the jungle village of Kla Kamum in the fight to reduce malaria.

Off to Kon Seng tomorrow!
