Dit jaar heb je keuze uit 'HEARTS OF THE WORLD: GLOBAL FLOWS OF MELODRAMA’ of ‘CINEMA OF POETRY: TEXTURE AND MOOD IN NARRATIVE FILM'.

Join Cinea and De Cinema in early July for ZOMERFILMCOLLEGE 2026: a week of in-depth lectures by internationally renowned critics and academics, Q&As with filmmakers, and screenings of both original 35mm copies and recent digital restorations!

This 31st (!) edition features two diverse programme strands. HEARTS OF THE WORLD: GLOBAL FLOWS OF MELODRAMA, presented in collaboration with the UAntwerpen - Faculteit Letteren en Wijsbegeerte, demonstrates how melodrama’s versatility allowed it to travel the world. With lectures by Professor Ben Singer (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and Dr. Viola Shafik (freelance filmmaker/lecturer/researcher).

In CINEMA OF POETRY: TEXTURE AND MOOD IN NARRATIVE FILM, we look for the elusive qualities—mystery, mood, texture, sensuality, etc.—that constitute ‘the poetic’ in narrative film. Guest speakers include ZFC habitués and film critics Adrian Martin and Cristina Álvarez López.

⤷ PASSES ARE NOW ON SALE via cinea.be! You can attend both programmes or either sub-programme. Tickets for separate lectures and screenings will become available at a later date. Film students and unemployed people can book their tickets at the reduced rate.

The lectures will be entirely in English, and all screenings will have English subtitles. More practical info via cinea.be.

APARAJITO is the second installment of Satyajit Ray’s humanist trilogy about Apu. Now Apu has become a young man, who moves with his family from the countryside to the buzzing city of Benares. His evolution from a curious child into an inquisitive young adult eventually leads him away from home, to go to college in Kolkata. In his search for self-expression and his own identity he moves further and further away from his mother and her traditional values. This film from 1956 wondrously depicts the friction between modernism and tradition with which Apu struggles.

We will be screening 𝘼𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙟𝙞𝙩𝙤 / 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙐𝙣𝙫𝙖𝙣𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙 on Tuesday, 8 July at 14h30 in followed with the lecture ‘Bonds of Family and Tradition in Ray’s Films’ by Ritika Kaushik.

On 1 October, you will be able to watch the third instalment of Satyajit Ray’s APU-trilogy in Mark your calendars!
