Did you know, since 1948, 9 core instruments of Human Rights Law spell out the 30 foundational articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) ?
“ Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,
“Now, Therefore the General Assembly proclaims this Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.”

Our commitment to human rights must be absolute." Most people had never heard of "human rights." Except for Franklin Delano Roosevelt in a couple of passing references, no president had really mentioned the concept, and it never had gained much traction around the world either. Carter’s words sparked an intense debate at every level of government and society, and in political capitals across the Atlantic Ocean, about what it would entail to shape a foreign policy based on the principle of human rights.” Did YOU know ?

The aim was to explore what human rights mean in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Brad Smith, President of Microsoft, and Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, concluded the day with a call to action: business, civil society, policy makers and technology companies have a responsibility to create solutions that keep humans at the core of emerging technologies... public-private collaboration to advance human rights.

Currently, BMCT is awaiting approval of two permaculture project proposals. The MOU for one is in the works. It is a project to establish a Permaculture Chair at MAPUT the agriculture university which oversees the lives of millions of peasant and small holder families dependent on dry-land farming for the most part, for survival, in India’s largest agriculture state, Rajasthan. It can model the future of agriculture institutions. To learn more about our proposal go here:
BMCT’s Human Rights T-shirt campaign will raise some of the funds for the MAPUT Permaculture Chair. Should the MOU with MAPUT not go through, the funds will go to help the growing permaculture network in India.
What does Permaculture have to do with human rights you ask? Here is how Lisa Rayner, explains it in 2009 in an article in the Energy Bulletin : “... (W)e are at risk of losing centuries-worth of human rights gains.... Permaculture is well-suited to take on the mantle of human rights... Permaculture ethics include “Care of People” and “Share the Surplus,” which encompass the psychological, social, political and economic dimensions of human life.... Just as the time is now to implement core permaculture strategies such as creating soil, planting trees and building water catchments, it’s also the time to work on repairing human relationships at the community level.... As we work to make our communities thriving places full of food forests and restored wild landscapes, I want to ensure that all the people who live in those places experience freedom and equality”.
