Singing since 1911

The Abertillery Ladies Orpheus choir was formed in 1911 by Tom Bundred.

Whilst there were many Welsh Male Voice Choirs from working class backgrounds at this time, especially within the mining communities, Welsh Ladies’ Choirs were mainly the preserve of the middle classes.

However, after enjoying a sing-along on a return journey from the seaside in 1907 the desire to form Abertillery’s very own ladies’ choir was born, and consequently founded in 1911, just three years after the Abertillery Male Orpheus Choir was set up in 1908.

Over 100 years on, the choir continues to enjoy weekly practices with Choir Director, Steve Bard, and accompanied by the talented Penny Hughes.
