You can get three free N95 masks at pharmacies, stores, or health centers nationwide. The Strategic National Stockpile has distributed millions of masks across the country as part of the Biden Administration’s strategy to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Currently and in the coming weeks, you will be available to pick up your masks at stores like CVS, Walgreens, RiteAid, Walmart, community health centers, and other locations. Stores that have masks will post signs indicating availability. You do not need an ID or insurance to get free masks. The Biden Administration will work on distributing children-sized masks in the future.

Why N95 masks? The CDC says N95 masks, when fitted properly, give the best protection for yourself and others – they decrease aerosol exposures by around 95%. They are great to use if you are at increased risk or will be around people who are immunocompromised, if you are in a crowded space, for traveling, and more. If you can’t find a N95, surgical masks are still encouraged, and even better if you layer it with a cloth mask!

You can get up to 8 COVID home testing kits per month for free through your insurance!

President Biden announced a new policy that individuals covered by a health insurance plan can get a FDA authorized/approved over-the-counter COVID test paid for up front or be reimbursed for the cost (up to $12 each). That is 8 per person, meaning if you have a family of 4 under your insurance plan, you can get up to 32 tests a month.

You can contact your insurance company to find which tests are FDA authorized and which pharmacies/stores are in-network for guaranteed coverage. You can go to a pharmacy or store to buy an over-the-counter COVID-19 test. If your insurance will not cover it at the register, keep the receipt to submit a claim to your insurance company for reimbursement.

If you don’t have insurance, you can get free at-home tests from covidtests.gov (currently 4 tests limited per residence). Another option is to get tested at a local site, you can find more information at your local or state’s health department website or at a community health center.
