The 4th of July committee made the difficult decision to cancel the fireworks show last night. While all the surrounding cities canceled their displays earlier in the evening, we waited until the very last minute to make the call. At 9:45, it was still raining at Veterans Park and the safety of shooting the fireworks off in the rain became questionable. Additionally, Veterans Park was nearly empty, and most of the people who had taken shelter in the ice arena had left.

What happens from here?

1. The fireworks will not be rescheduled. There are a host of logistics that go into facilitating the show: street closures, MTC bus detours, public safety and public works staffing, permits, and safety lighting. These things get planned months in advance and cannot be easily changed.

2. The pyrotechnics company will provide a credit that we will apply to next year's show.

There is no one more disheartened about cancelling the show than the committee. There are fewer than 10 volunteer committee members who have spent the greater part of the past nine months fundraising, planning, ideating, dreaming, and doing to make the festivities happen. There were so many incredible things about yesterday—the pancake breakfast, the memorial wreath laying, the parade, and the vibrant party in the park. We’re so grateful to the sponsors, our incredible volunteers, community members who showed up in red, white and blue gear with your families and friends, and our elected officials who make it all possible.

It truly takes a village, and we’re sad the weather didn't cooperate with us last night. Thank you for understanding our decision and we look forward to seeing you next year!

Richfield community: We are so sad to report that tonight’s fireworks display is officially canceled and will not be rescheduled. We waited until the last possible moment, because we really wanted to make it happen! It’s too wet for the fireworks to be safely set off, and still raining on the east side. Thank you for an incredible day celebrating America’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Stay dry, and we’ll see you next year!

Music, food trucks, and inflatables/kid zone are canceled for the evening. Fireworks are still TBD—stay tuned here for updates!

Community members: Please DO NOT call 911 to ask if the fireworks are happening or not. Dispatch is getting flooded with phone calls about fireworks. We just need time to evaluate and make a decision—we'll post here and on the community page as soon as there is a decision.
