Heiden Warehouse Proposal
Neversink River
📍Thompson, NY

A massive development has been proposed along the Neversink River in Thompson, NY that poses potential threats to the integrity of this world-renowned watershed in the Catskills.  Up until November 30th, the Town of Thompson is accepting comments with specific goals of collecting insight from the public on considerations and factors that we feel the Heiden Warehouse developers must include in the environmental evaluation of their proposal.

Catskill Mountainkeeper, Trout Unlimited, Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, and Theodore Gordon Fly Fishers have submitted a formal letter of comment that outlines just a few of the critical considerations that we feel must be included in the study, but we need your help too! Visit the link in our bio to review and make a 1-click declaration to the Town of Thompson that helps reinforce these considerations.

Don’t delay, speak up for the Neversink today!

Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) are a keystone coldwater species and the official freshwater fish of New York State. In the Catskills, wild populations of Brook Trout are increasingly threatened by rising water temperatures, altered stream flows, habitat fragmentation, and competition from non-native species. In response, the Ashokan-Pepacton Watershed Chapter of Trout Unlimited, with funding from the Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program (AWSMP), initiated a multi-year effort to assess the genetic diversity, distribution, and resilience of Brook Trout populations throughout the Ashokan and Pepacton sub-basins.

Esopus Creek on the upstream side of the 5 arches bridge in Boiceville, NY at 11:15am on August 28, 2011. Hurricane Irene removed the Cold Brook Bridge just upstream a short time later on that morning. Lives and businesses were forever changed….

Hurricanes Irene and Lee reeked havoc on the communities of the Catskills. Taking action involves using data and science to understand events and what risk they might cause given conditions. Extreme weather isn’t a disaster by itself. Extreme weather will happen, and perhaps is happening more often and more severely. Not being aware of extreme weather, properly preparing for or not responding adequately is when we see disasters occur.
We did learn from our experiences with Hurricane Irene…

The 5 Arches Bridge is being replaced to ensure the Esopus Creek infrastructure is more resilient to severe flooding like Hurricane Irene. This bridge replacement project was one result of a Local Flood Analysis conducted by residents of the Town of Olive, NYC DEP, NYS DEC and other experts.

A new Local Flood Analysis is being started for Shokan and West Shokan to gather local resident and expert insights and to take action to protect the community.

We know that these cool nights feel more like fall…but just remember that trout are stressed when water temperatures go above 68 degrees. These are the daily water temperatures in the Esopus Creek at Coldbrook. Be aware and take care.

BREAKING NEWS: 45 million acres of public land are officially at risk of harmful development.

The Department of Agriculture will publish its Notice of Intent to rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule this Friday, August 29, moving to strip protections from 45 million acres of public lands. The move follows the agency’s announcement earlier this year and will trigger a 21-day public comment period.

“For nearly 25 years, the Roadless Rule has safeguarded America’s backcountry—lands that are home to 70 percent of our native trout and salmon, that protect drinking water for millions, and that offer some of the finest hunting and fishing opportunity in the world,” said Chris Wood, President and CEO of Trout Unlimited.

“We would, honestly, welcome a transparent, collaborative process to determine if tweaks to the rule would allow us to better protect the values of roadless areas while also better protecting communities of people at risk of catastrophic fire. Rather than rescinding the Roadless Rule and allowing that chaos to unfold, we encourage the Forest Service to work with stakeholders to develop solutions that continue to protect roadless areas and intact fish and wildlife habitat.”

The Olive Flood Advisory Committee, working under the direction of the Town of Olive Town Board, invites you to attend the first in a series of public meetings to find solutions to flooding in the hamlets of Shokan & West Shokan.

This Local Flood Analysis (LFA) will focus on beneficial and feasible solutions. We’re asking you to help us identify issues and areas prone to flooding within your hamlet.

What are your experiences? Do you have suggestions? Questions? Together, we’ll develop a range of strategies that will be tested for their effectiveness using engineering analysis. Initial results will be reported at a second public meeting to help refine these strategies.
