Last night’s speaker was Valerie Sollis. Valerie had a long career within the clothing industry specifically with regards to testing fabrics and garments. She helped to set up the first testing laboratory, based at Corah’s in Leicester, which was for Marks and Spencer’s. Valerie has also worked with many other large companies such as Primark, British Home Stores, Morrisons and Jaeger. It is important that clothing and other fabric items are tested to the same standard, and, as more and more manufacturing has moved overseas, Valerie has also travelled to testing laboratories in these countries.

We were all intrigued by the washing symbol showing ‘Do not dry’ !

Top tip - to stop your woolies pilling/bobbling, wash them inside out.

Five of us attended the Leicestershire and Rutland Federation of WI's Annual Council Meeting. Hilary and Lesley doing their usual excellent job helping with refreshments.

Our first speaker was Dr. Doug Shehan from Heartwize which is the Federation charity of the year. Their aim is to increase public awareness of out of hospital cardiac arrests, to ensure basic resuscitation skills are taught in schools and to improve awareness and provision of defibrillators with the hope that everyone will know how to recognise and respond to a cardiac arrest to increase chances of survival. Bystanders can be lifesavers.
Mike Kapur, Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, was our next speaker, a role he has been doing since 2018. He explained a bit about his role as representative of the monarch in Leicestershire. Most recently he played an important part in the recent visit of HRH The Princess of Wales' visit to Leicester.
The afternoon's speaker was Adam Henson, whom we all know well from Countryfile. He spoke about his family, his father’s passion for rare breeds and starting the Cotswold Farm Park. He talked about the challenges of modern farming and about some of the tech available for farmers now, challenging the old adage that a farmer should be “strong in the arm, thick in the head”
His passion for the job was obvious throughout his speech.

Hilary won first place in the competitions for her preserve.

A sound bath is a meditative, immersive experience where participants are "bathed" in sound waves and vibrations produced by instruments like crystal bowls, gongs, chimes, and tuning forks for deep relaxation and stress reduction.

After talking us through the different types of instruments and the sounds they make, Joanna, and husband Dave, led us on a Sound Bath.

Ideally Sound Baths are best lying down but we opted to be seated as the church floor wasn’t very welcoming!

It was a very relaxing session and enjoyed by all.
