Hekeao Hinds River Catchment 💦🍃
Working alongside the Hinds and Mayfield communities last year to create a catchment resource was a shining example of what can be achieved through applying the principles of place-based and inquiry-based learning.
Kānuka Trust's locally designed Exploring our Footprint programme encourages community collaboration, which was at the heart of this Advance Ashburton Community Foundation funded project.
A huge thanks to Hinds and Mayfield Schools, the Hekeao Hinds Water Enhancement Trust - HHWET and EOS Ecology.
Matt and the team look forward to expanding on these learnings in 2026 and beyond.

Well what a start to 2026!
Term 1 has been full on connecting with all the schools Kim worked with in 2025, building on top of the amazing foundation she laid. We welcomed Ashburton Intermediate to our services by providing a tailor made, interactive presentation for their year 8 camps to Peel Forest.

Over the course of 6 weeks we introduced all year 8 classes to our organisation, exploring our environmental footprint, the importance of our kaitiakitanga of the environment, and the diverse and wonderful world surrounding their Peel Forest camp.

Kānuka Trust delivered an interactive session at all four camps, making use of the outdoor setting and enjoying the good fortune of fine weather. We touched on native flora, birds and other fauna found in Peel Forest, harmful flora, pests and ways to control their impact.

The engagement from all of the camps was amazing and we like to think we enhanced the rest of the camp experience with the information provided.

We hope to see some of these faces out at community events this year and look forward to working with the school in the near future.

This is funded thanks to a generous Ashburton District Council biodiversity grant ... focusing on stewardship and kaitaki 💦🌿

Introducing our new Community Connector
Only four weeks on the job and already Matt Poole has made some good connections across our community.
Matt is a father to three tamariki and a New Zealand Scouts leader of 5 – 8 year olds. He is an outdoor enthusiast who has a love for the native wilderness of Aotearoa. This has led to native planting and pest control in his own backyard, along with experience out tramping and hunting in our back country.
Matt brings an authentic "kiwi" attitude and practical hands-on experience to the already amazing "Exploring Our Footprint" program created by the Kānuka Mid Canterbury Regeneration Trust.
With 2026 planning underway, Matt is looking forward to building off the awesome work Kim and the Kānuka Trust team have achieved over the past seven years.

As Community Connector, Kim’s dedication to building strong relationships, supporting local initiatives and inspiring others to think differently has made a lasting impact across our district.
For over three years Kim championed environmental awareness and community connection with warmth and professionalism.
As she steps down from the role, we acknowledge the valuable contribution Kim has made and the positive legacy she leaves behind.
We wish her every success in her next chapter and thank Kim sincerely for your service.

We had a great session at Hinds School today! Ange shared her knowledge of the areas history and how changes link to water. We were able to look at current maps and historical maps online too!
Our inquiry learning has been great and this crew were full of questions for Ange.
