Back in 2018, I made this a top issue in the Governor’s race: the State Investment Council (SIC)—chaired by the Governor—has the power to invest our money in ways that directly benefit New Mexicans.
My proposal was simple: take just 5% of the SIC portfolio—$1.5 billion at the time (now 5% is over $3.15 billion)—and create Public/Private vertical funds to invest in New Mexico’s own industries and strengths. That plan would’ve unlocked over $3 billion in targeted investments, helping create more than 250,000 new jobs across our state.
Fast forward to today: the SIC has grown our "Rainy Day Funds" as they call it to over $63 billion, and while they’ve committed $575 million to invest in New Mexico, they’ve only deployed $50 million over the last 18–24 months. Meanwhile, they’ve handed out $75 million a year in management fees to three out-of-state firms that were supposed to set up shop here, hire locally, and help attract and build startups in New Mexico.
None of that has happened.
The next Governor has a real opportunity to reset our economic course—not by pushing political slogans, but by partnering with those of us in the private sector who know how to scale, invest, and grow businesses.
Right now, New Mexico’s job growth is stuck at 0.07%, while our neighboring states—Colorado, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, and Utah—are growing at 2.8% to 3.4%. With the right leadership and smart deployment of these funds, we could double our job growth to 1.7–2.0%, making the next Governor one of the most effective economic leaders in our state’s history.
New Mexico—it’s time we elect leaders focused on creating opportunities for our people, not just their political careers.
