RIP

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Wing Commander Jack Harris, believed to be the last surviving World War Two Bomber Command pilot, who passed away at the age of 104.

Jack carried out 37 missions with 550 Squadron, including raids over Dresden, and always returned home safely despite facing incredible danger. His bravery and legacy were honored at his funeral in Tunbridge Wells, attended by family, friends, and an RAF bugler who played the Last Post.

Jack was also instrumental in forming the 550 Squadron and RAF North Killingholme Association, helping to keep the memories of his fellow servicemen alive.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace, Wing Commander Jack Harris.

What is it like to be a veteran returning to civilian life? Our Armed Forces family tell us it can be hard.

Problems once shared as a team, become darker problems alone.

This week we launch a new campaign to recognise the challenges veterans face when returning to civilian life. At SSAFA, we strive to reach and embrace all our military family so they never battle alone.

A huge thank you to the organisers of Swallowfield Show, who recently donated £1,000! The annual show raises money for several local charities and SSAFA Berkshire was chosen to be supported from funds raised at the 2022 show.

Sophie Schneider, SSAFA’s Branch Administration Officer for Berkshire, said: “We had a stall at the Swallowfield Fair last year and made £175, but then the organisers gave us a donation of £1000! We are delighted.”

The donation will help us to continue to assist veterans, service persons and their families who are in need of support.

The annual event is organised and run by volunteer members and friends of the Swallowfield Horticultural Society and is set to run this year on the 27th and 28th August.
