In the Grand Ledge School District there are currently over 1500 students who qualify for the free and reduced cost lunch program. In order to qualify for the free and reduced lunch program, a student must be considered “food insecure.” What it means to be food insecure is that one is unable to access food in a consistent manner. While students are feed during the school week with the free and
reduced lunch program, what happens on the weekends? Hunger doesn’t stop on the weekend. That's where Blessings in a Backpack Grand Ledge steps in. We provide a bag full of non-perishable food over the weekends to these hungry children to sustain them over the weekend. We want them to be well fed and ready to learn when they show up to school on Mondays. Research shows that students who are well-nourished learn better and are better able to take advantage of the educational opportunities presented to them. A simple gesture of providing a weekend backpack full of food will positively impact the at-risk children in Grand Ledge. These children are our neighbors and our future. It costs $100 for to feed a child on weekends weekends during the school year. However, we appreciate any level of financial support you can offer at this time. Donation information can be found at our web site: www.blessingsinabackpackgl.org 100% of your donation goes to feeding the kids in Grand Ledge. We are a volunteer-run program, and the national organization we partner with (our 501c3) pays for their salaries and operating costs through foundation grants. I would be more than happy to speak with you in person or talk to your group or organization to discuss this community-wide effort.
