Weekend food survival backpack program for children at risk for food insecurity in Grand Ledge, Delta Township and Wacousta, MI

In the Grand Ledge School District there are currently over 1500 students who qualify for the free and reduced cost lunch program. In order to qualify for the free and reduced lunch program, a student must be considered “food insecure.” What it means to be food insecure is that one is unable to access food in a consistent manner. While students are feed during the school week with the free and

reduced lunch program, what happens on the weekends? Hunger doesn’t stop on the weekend. That's where Blessings in a Backpack Grand Ledge steps in. We provide a bag full of non-perishable food over the weekends to these hungry children to sustain them over the weekend. We want them to be well fed and ready to learn when they show up to school on Mondays. Research shows that students who are well-nourished learn better and are better able to take advantage of the educational opportunities presented to them. A simple gesture of providing a weekend backpack full of food will positively impact the at-risk children in Grand Ledge. These children are our neighbors and our future. It costs $100 for to feed a child on weekends weekends during the school year. However, we appreciate any level of financial support you can offer at this time. We are a volunteer-run program, and the national organization we partner with (our 501c3) pays for their salaries and operating costs through foundation grants. The Tim Marsh family stopped by to pack the bags of food again for us. They come to honor the life of Deb Marsh (wife/mother/grandmother) that worked as an aide in the schools and saw how the bags of food impacted some of her students. Thank you for taking time to continue making a difference in the lives of students in our program.

These wonderful members of the First Congregational United Church of Christ packed the bags of food when we didn’t have another group available!! (This is their second time packing). We very much appreciate their unwavering support!!!

The GL boys basketball team packed our bags last time—what a team!!! They kept us busy loading their filled bags into the bins to be delivered to the schools! With that speed they should do well in their games! Thank you for caring about and helping the students in our program.

This little guy came to our Blessings packing to give us his donation from a Christmas gift he received. He wanted to help kids have food to eat on the weekends!! Thank you for sharing your gift with us!! ❤️❤️

This group of friends (from around the Lansing area) play pickle ball together and offered to take time out of their busy schedules to help pack our bags! Thank you for driving to Grand Ledge and helping us feed the students in our school district.

We are grateful for the MacLaren ED employees that selected our program to receive gifts from their Christmas Giving Tree. They purchased food items for us to include in our bags of food!! Thank you for caring about the students in our community!!

We are so thankful to this single employee of Preston’s that came to help pack our bags of food! She was such a trooper as we had extra food for the Christmas break and it took extra time to pack! (The other people are volunteer helpers for Blessings). THANK YOU for caring about the students in our community that benefit from receiving these bags of food!!

The staff at Hayes Intermediate School serve our children in many ways. Not only do they do many things in school, they volunteered to pack bags for Blessings in a Backpack after school and a staff meeting. Thank you.for your service during school and after hours. You give our children so many blessings with your service.

The wonderful members of the First Congregational United Church of Christ packed the special Thanksgiving bags of food. They packed these large bags and helped the students in our program eat over the extended weekend. THANK YOU!!!
