STATEMENT OF INTENT FOR MONTCALM AREA MASTER GARDENER ASSOCIATION

THE PURPOSE OF THE ASSOCIATION IS TO BRING TOGETHER ACTIVE MASTER GARDENER VOLUNTEERS TO SERVE AS AN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE TO MSUE (MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION) MONTCALM COUNTY IN THEIR COMMON GOAL OF PROVIDING HORTICULTURAL EDUCATION TO THE CITIZENS WITHIN THE AREA.

Join us for our first Forester Field Trip on Wednesday, September 16 at 6:00 p.m. to learn the basics of foraging in the Comden-Towle Model Forest! Our forester will help you identify edible and medicinal mushrooms, plants, shrubs, and trees, as well as how and when to harvest. Please come dressed for the weather.

Mark Your Calendar for Kent Conservation District's Fall Tree & Plant Sale on Saturday, September 26, 2026! This year's event will feature a browse-and-buy native plant sale, where you can shop a variety of native perennials, grasses, and other plants to enhance your landscape, support pollinators, and improve wildlife habitat. Plants will be available to purchase and take home the same day while supplies last.

In addition to the plant sale, we'll host a Tree Education Event designed to help you select the right native tree for your property. Learn about tree species, proper planting, and long-term care while exploring the many environmental benefits trees provide. After the educational event, you'll have the opportunity to pre-order the native trees that best fit your landscape, with tree pickup taking place later in October.

Tall with prickly seed heads, the invasive cut-leaved and common teasel plants are popping up in roadside ditches across Illinois right now. These aggressive non-native species can quickly take over native prairies and savannas when they go unmanaged.

About Teasels
• Cut-leaved teasel tends to be more aggressive than common teasel. Both are regulated through the Illinois Exotic W**d Act.
• Cut-leaved teasel blooms from July through September, with white flowers. Common teasel blooms from June through October, typically with purple flowers.

Teasel Removal Options
• Mowing is not an effective treatment; plants will still flower even with repeated mowing.
• Small rosettes can be dug out of the ground; large rosettes are difficult to remove by digging. Once flowering has begun, flower heads can be cut from the plant and bagged, and roots may be chopped 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface.
• Herbicide is effective for removing teasel. Treatment should occur in the spring or early summer. Treatment may also be applied during the fall and winter, since seeds will germinate and form rosettes that persist while other native vegetation is dormant.
