Statement from the Kurdish Society of Queensland
Postponement of Newroz 2026
Newroz is the soul of the Kurdish people —a fire that has carried us through centuries of struggle, a symbol of resistance, renewal, and the unbreakable spirit of our nation.
Newroz is a celebration shared across many cultures, including our Iranian brothers and sisters with whom we have stood in both moments of joy and times of unimaginable sorrow.
This year, however, our hearts are far too heavy to celebrate.
The recent massacres of young Iranian including Kurds, Azeris, Baluch, Lurs, Arabs and Fars protesters, have shaken every home, every family, every mother and father.
Young men and women — full of dreams and full of promise — were taken from us simply for raising their voices for freedom.
Entire families now carry wounds that may never heal.
As Kurds, we cannot dance while our own people are grieving.
And we cannot celebrate while our Iranian brothers and sisters bury their children.
Although the death of the dictator Ali Khamenei has brought a moment of relief, the suffering of our people — Kurdish and Iranian alike — continues.
The future remains uncertain, and our responsibility today is to honour the pain of the families who have lost everything.
For this reason, the Kurdish Society of Queensland has made the difficult decision to
Postpone our Newroz celebration scheduled for 21 March 2026.
We choose solidarity. We choose respect.
We choose to stand beside the families in Iran and Kurdistan who are living with an emptiness that no celebration could ever fill.
We will wait — proudly and patiently —for the day when our people are free, when the Iranian people rise above fear, and when the sacrifices of this generation become the last bloodshed required for a better future.
On that day, we will celebrate a Newroz of Freedom —greater, brighter, and more meaningful than ever before.
Until that day comes, we stand with the grieving, with the brave, and with every Kurdish and Iranian heart longing for justice, dignity, and a life free from tyranny.
