Here we are at the proposed site for Ionad Hiort | St Kilda Centre.

On a clear day, St Kilda sits out to the south-west and beyond us lies the Flannan Isles.

This coastline was not chosen at random. Its cliffs, exposure, Atlantic weather and deep cultural connections all help root the project within a landscape that already feels tied to the story of St Kilda.

In this short clip, our director Iain Buchanan, speaks about the site entirely in Gaelic reflecting the language and living heritage that continues in this part of the world.

Enjoy an aperitif at Uig Sands. We are proud to serve a carefully chosen selection of local spirits and drinks from across the Highlands and Islands.

Here we have the Isle of Lewis ‘Leòdhas’ gin, served with tonic and a hint of citrus and thyme.

It’s a little over 50 years since I started taking a significant interest in the Harris Tweed industry. At that time it was far bigger than it is today but was considered to be facing an “existential threat”.

Why Uig?

When plans first began for a centre dedicated to telling the story of St Kilda, a competition was launched across the Outer Hebrides to find the most fitting location.

The proposal from Uig, on the Isle of Lewis, was chosen unanimously. From the proposed site at Geodha Sgoilt, St Kilda lies on the horizon. But the connection between Uig and St Kilda goes far beyond simply being able to see the islands on a clear day. These places have long been connected through language, sea routes, shared histories and the movement of people across the Atlantic edge of Scotland. There is also something about the landscape itself. The cliffs, the exposure to the Atlantic and the weather. It carries an atmosphere that echoes something of St Kilda itself.

Ionad Hiort| St Kilda Centre would not exist in this form without the generosity and support of others.

We are deeply grateful to the late Sir Peter Cresswell and associates, the previous owners of Uig and Hamnaway Estate, for donating the proposed project site at Geodha Sgoilt and for their continued support of the vision for Ionad Hiort.

The site looks out across the Atlantic with St Kilda visible on a clear day.

2030 isn’t that far away.

In just a few years, it will mark 100 years since the evacuation of St Kilda. A moment that still echoes through families, communities and collective memory across the Hebrides and beyond.

Our hope is that by then, Ionad Hiort | St Kilda Centre will be ready to open its doors. Ready to welcome visitors from all over the world and share St Kilda's story.
