Well I was planning on posting a feel good “Franks home” post today. But that’s not how things have gone. I drove all the way to MSU this afternoon after he got the anticipated all clear to come home this morning. But when I pulled in I was greeted with the information that he was back in ultrasound because on his afternoon exam he randomly spiked a fever. When I went back to see him he wanted nothing to do with me. He has been holding a grudge against me after having to give him injections last week and from forcing him to go back to the hospital. So I made the trip back with no Frank. As much as it’s not what we want I would rather have this scenario over the one where I picked him up just a bit earlier and he had complications at home. They are running bloodwork as everything on the ultrasound and exam came back good. Either way he is going to be hanging out there for a few more days to be safe. As much as we want Frank back home, even more so we want him better. Please send all the healing energy and positive thoughts to our buddy so he can get back to causing mischief and running with Ruthie! 🙏💜

This morning Frank had a scope done and they found several ulcers. It feels weird, but this is great news! It aligns with his symptoms as well as the situation. Not only can the stress of surgery and hospitalization cause ulcers, his recovery dietary limitations can be responsible. Ideally this means that his cecum is recovering well and unrelated to the flare ups. If all we are dealing with are ulcers then this is best case scenario. The clinical team also discussed the pros and cons of getting him back on hay and decided it would be acceptable and appropriate to do so. He is getting meds for the ulcers and they are going to slowly reintroduce hay to his diet while he hangs out at the hospital for a few days of observation to make sure no issues arise.

Last week Frank began to show mild symptoms of discomfort. We immediately had our vet out. His heart rate was through the roof but everything else was good on exam. We had already started him on pain management and she came multiple days in a row and did tubed fluids. After a few days he was back to normal and we were hopeful it was a fluke. Yesterday during a new volunteer orientation I noticed him lightly pawing at the ground and he began showing distress symptoms. So I made the decision to immediately head back to MSU for a more extensive evaluation. Similar to last week everything looked good. No obvious problem, but something is obviously going on. He has been closely monitored and has done well overnight and today. There is always a risk that the cecum was too damaged when they did the surgery and is now failing, but they are leaning more towards adhesions from when it was inflamed or stomach ulcers. So tomorrow they will do a scope to look at his stomach. Unfortunately there is no way to confirm adhesions other than exploratory surgery and that just is not an option for him after already undergoing such major surgery. We know we have asked so much of everyone this year and really tapped out donor support. So we aren’t going to be launching a fundraiser for this, however if you are able to donate towards his bill we would greatly appreciate it. This bill is nowhere near his surgery bill, but is still an unexpected cost. We are so grateful for the surgical team at MSU and their dedication to Frank. He’s been transferred over to the medical team now, but would not be there without their efforts. The silver lining in this is that the teaching surgeon who performed his surgery and was on his intake last night was the same surgeon who saved Squishy after she was mauled and surrendered at the hospital. Even though we have spoken several times last night was the first opportunity we had to actually meet.

Found a big automatic feeder that can be programmed AND also connects to wifi and can be activated from anywhere. It isn’t made to be exposed to the elements though so had to come up with a way to have it mounted in the run in, out of the reach of Frank, but for the hay pellets and grain to go outside onto the mats where he has to move around to eat them. Enter a random pvc fitting + a modified funnel + a shelf from scrapwood.
