Thomas and nine friends are running the Prague International Marathon in memory of his mum, Jane, this Sunday.

Jane sadly passed away at just 47 after nearly eight years living with relapsing polychondritis (RP).

Seeing what she went through showed Thomas how difficult and isolating life with an autoimmune disease can be, and he wants to help others who might be facing the same.

This marathon holds particular meaning, as Prague is where RP was first discovered.

All of us at the Wren Project have been really moved by Jane’s story, and we’re thinking of Thomas, his family and his friends as they take this on together.

Every donation, no matter the size, will help make sure people living with autoimmune disease has someone to talk to, so they don’t have to face it alone.

There is still time to donate and support this incredible group as they raise vital funds.

Living with an autoimmune disease can change your perception of yourself. Ania was inspired to volunteer with us after seeing first-hand how isolating life with a chronic condition can feel.

At 24, she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease and Thyroid Eye Disease, two conditions that profoundly affected her daily life.

She says: “The disease forced me to re-evaluate my entire identity, the people I surrounded myself with, my job, my physical strength, my mental energy and all the usual measurements of life.”

She added: “I received a lot of support from my family and friends, so when my symptoms began to ease slightly, I wanted to give back some of the goodness I received."

“I joined Wren, and I’ve become really passionate about it. I look forward to each shift and feel very grateful for the people I get to meet through this project.”

Through her role with us, Ania now offers regular one-to-one emotional support to people navigating their own autoimmune journey. “Supporting others with an autoimmune disease makes me feel less lonely in my own experience.”

She also reflects on the training provided: “It was highly informative and effectively prepared me for my first session.”

You're invited to join our online event! If you’re living with two or more autoimmune diseases, we’d love you to share your experience with us.

We are holding a forum on Tuesday 5th May on living with multiple autoimmune diseases, with two options to join: 1pm-2pm or 6pm-7pm (via Zoom)

We’re bringing people together to talk about the real challenges of living with multiple autoimmune diseases, the impact multiple conditions has on your mental health, and the system failures making it more difficult to navigate health.

Your voice will help shape future research and an upcoming conference we are hosting on living with multiple autoimmune diseases.

We’re particularly interested in understanding:
• the impact on mental health
• the challenges of navigating healthcare, work and wider systems

If you’re able to be a part of this, please send us a quick email to [email protected] with what time slot you can join 📩

Today is , and Kate Middleton, our Founder and CEO, is speaking at the ’s Annual Conference, in Glasgow.

She’s sharing with healthcare professionals how mental health support can make a real difference for people living with autoimmune diseases, especially the power of being truly listened to.

Because when someone feels heard, it can change how they cope, how they feel and how they move forward.

This clip is a moment from her talk, highlighting why support like ours matters

This , Helen shares her experience of living with the condition and her journey to diagnosis as part of our series.

At Easter in 2021, Helen had shingles, followed just two weeks later by Covid-19. What followed was a long and difficult period where she “didn’t really get well.”

Over the next two years, Helen made multiple visits to her GP before finally being referred to rheumatology. After months of waiting, she was diagnosed with Sjögren’s disease.

She shared: “Learning to pace myself is really hard. It’s so easy to do too much one day when I’m feeling well, then be poorly for two or three weeks as my body recovers.”

Day to day life takes careful planning too. “Making sure I’ve always got the meds I need" can be stressful.

Helen discovered the Wren Project while searching online for support. “I found it really helpful,” she says.

Today marks the very first , a moment to recognise just how vital hormones are to our health, wellbeing and sense of self.

Katie, who we have supported through our free video calls, shares her experience of living with Hashimoto’s and how it affects her day-to-day life.

Hashimoto’s is a chronic autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, so she understands first hand how much hormones matter.

Living with an autoimmune disease can be overwhelming, and emotional support matters just as much as physical care. That is where our trained volunteers come in, offering a safe and understanding space to talk.

If you are a UK adult living with an autoimmune disease, you do not have to face it alone. You can sign up for free support through our website

Living with an autoimmune disease can feel like a real life horror movie… with no end credits.

But being heard and truly listened to can make a big difference

Sometimes all someone needs is someone to listen 👂

Charities like The Wren Project provide listening support to people living with autoimmune diseases and are currently looking for more volunteers on GoVo.

Mohammed, who’s volunteered since studying his Masters, provides a listening ear for anyone who wishes to share their worries in times of distress or feelings they might be going through living with an autoimmune disease.

A quick call could help change lives and by volunteering through GoVo you could be a part of a great team to help make a big difference. Sign up today at govo.org
