Conversations will include a review of the 2023 session, what advocates should be aware of going into a state-election year, ways to build in your community, and how organizations can engage with elected officials in order to move their campaigns forward. Join the Advocacy Institute on Thursday, November 16th from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM for our training on Relationship Building for the Upcoming Session. We will explore effective strategies to connect with elected officials and key players and appreciate the importance of the legislative and budget cycles to inform your approach at different times of the year.

Participants should expect to:

- Gain confidence in using a variety of strategies to build relationships & strategically align relationship-building activities
- Understand that the relationship-building skills you already have are relevant and important to this part of the process and the success of your advocacy efforts
- Understand the range of types of secondary targets and the importance of creative and expansive thinking to identify levers to move primary targets

Setting the Stage sets the foundation for developing an advocacy campaign by examining the legislative landscape and power dynamics at both the city and state level. Prepare for the legislative session ahead and connect with advocates across New York in the Advocacy Institute’s annual Virtual Summer Camp: Advocacy 101 series. Over the course of 6 sessions spanning three weeks in July, we will discuss campaign strategy considerations, effective coalition building, key decision makers in Albany, and the budget and legislative processes. Each week, one session will dive into advocacy basics while the second session will spotlight regional leaders and campaigns in Long Island, Western New York, and Hudson Valley. We encourage advocates to attend as many sessions as possible, if not all, as the sessions build on each other to provide a comprehensive understanding. Session dates are as follows:

- Tuesday, July 11th, 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM – Setting the Stage for Your Campaign and Coalition Building
- Thursday, July 13th, 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM – Regional Spotlight: Long Island

Join us on Thursday, May 25th from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM to learn more about the Advocacy Leadership Accelerator. In this information session we will discuss the goals and curriculum of the program, participation requirements, and how to apply.

The Advocacy Institute is now accepting applications for the next Advocacy Leadership Accelerator (ALA) cohort! This is a 10-month program that seeks to create skills, expand capacity, and build networks to support advocates advancing social justice across New York State. Held from September 2023 through June 2024, this is an opportunity for 20 advocates with some experience in legislative and budget advocacy to strengthen and apply their leadership in active campaigns. Applications from the individual applicant and corresponding organization are due Friday, June 16th.
