Ecosystem Restoration Alliance, Indian Ocean Ecosystem Restoration Alliance, Indian Ocean is an NGO based in Mauritius. Founded in 2016, its projects focus on conservation, restoration and education.

The Ecosystem Restoration Alliance, Indian Ocean is a newly-founded not-for-profit organisation. Our core principles are to restore, conserve and educate - to recover degraded ecosystems for the benefit of humans and nature alike. Our projects main focuses are forest restoration, education and the conservation of native flora and fauna. Bats provide vital ecosystem services such as seed dispersal,

pollination and pest control. If these were to disappear it would have devastating effects on the restoration of Mauritius' already depleted forests. Less than 1% of endemic quality forests remain and bats may be the key to restoring it to it's former glory. To make bats even more indispensable, guano (faeces) is a valuable fertiliser as it is rich in nutrients. This increases their value to humans, particularly when paired with their control of agricultural pests. Therefore, education is of the up-most importance in order to spread the word of the significance of bats. We are taking on this mammoth task of protecting the bat species of Mauritius from further prosecution and extinction.

Building a Greener and Sustainable Future Through Agroforestry

This initiative was funded by Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund.

Ecosystem Restoration Alliance, Indian Ocean (ERA), in collaboration with PAT'S Nature FARM and RTC - Regional Training Centre successfully organised an Agroforestry Workshop on the 14th May 2026 bringing together farmers, landowners, environmental enthusiasts, and community members passionate about sustainable land management and ecosystem restoration.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to FAREI for their valuable contribution and support during the workshop.

Together, we continue to promote sustainable agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem restoration for a greener and more resilient future.

For 100 years, Sir David Attenborough has helped the world experience the beauty, wonder and fragility of our planet.

From forests and oceans to the smallest living creatures, his work has inspired generations to look at nature with curiosity, respect and responsibility.

As he once said:
‘No one will protect what they don’t care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced.’

Thank you for dedicating your life to bringing nature closer to humanity and reminding us why conservation matters.

Happy 100th Birthday, Sir David Attenborough.

A cleaner environment starts with collective action. Every piece of litter removed is a step toward healthier ecosystems, protected biodiversity, and a more beautiful community for all.

We warmly encourage everyone to take part, support, or spread the word about this meaningful initiative. Together, we can make a real difference for our island and future generations 🌍💚

Let’s join hands for nature, for our communities, and for a cleaner tomorrow.

We heard that the proposal involving the Mauritian fruit bat (Pteropus niger) breeding and export for lab research has now been approved. While we recognise the importance of scientific and public health research, this endemic and Endangered species must remain a conservation priority to ensure that the long-term survival of this unique species is not compromised.
