Building Palliative Care Capacity in Debre Berhan

Last week, Hospice Ethiopia conducted a five-day Basic Palliative Care Training at Debre Berhan Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, bringing together 25 healthcare professionals from different disciplines, including nurses, doctors, a pharmacist, and a social worker.

The training aimed to strengthen healthcare professionals’ knowledge and skills in palliative care and support public hospitals, particularly referral hospitals, to establish and strengthen palliative care services.

By building the capacity of multidisciplinary teams, we are working to improve access to quality palliative care for people living with life-limiting illnesses across Ethiopia.

We are grateful to our donors and partners Hospice Ethiopia UK and Band Aid Charitable Trust whose continued support makes this work possible. Together, we are working toward a future where palliative care is accessible to those who need it, wherever they are.

At Hospice Ethiopia, we provide holistic palliative care that supports not only medical needs but also the dignity and well-being of our patients.

Through our food support initiative, we help ensure that patients living with life-limiting illnesses receive nutritious food to support their strength and comfort during care.

The photos shared here show our nurses together with our service users during this support activity.

We are deeply grateful to our partners and supporters whose generosity makes this possible. Together, we ensure that no one faces illness alone or hungry.

Hospice Ethiopia recently conducted a four-day palliative care training for 25 healthcare professionals working at Jimma University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, strengthening their knowledge and skills in delivering quality palliative care.

The training marks another important step in our longstanding partnership with the hospital, building on the progress made since the establishment of its inpatient palliative care unit a year ago and further strengthening the quality of care provided to patients and families.

By strengthening the capacity of multidisciplinary healthcare teams, we are contributing to improved access to compassionate, quality palliative care for those who need it most.

In his opening and closing remarks, Dr. Hunde, chief clinical director of the hospital, emphasized that palliative care is an essential health service, not a luxury. He encouraged participants to apply the knowledge and skills gained during the training within their respective wards to improve the quality of care provided to patients and families.

We look forward to continued collaboration in advancing palliative care services!

Strengthening Palliative Care Capacity in Hawassa

Last week, Hospice Ethiopia conducted a four-day palliative care training for 24 healthcare professionals at Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. The training brought together a multidisciplinary group of participants, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and social workers.

Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital is one of the four hospitals in Ethiopia that provide radiotherapy services. Integrating palliative care into cancer care is therefore essential, as it is a key component of comprehensive cancer care.

As part of our commitment to improving access to palliative care, Hospice Ethiopia continues to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to deliver effective, palliative care services.

Together, we are working toward ensuring that patients with serious illnesses receive compassionate, holistic palliative care when they need it most. 💙

We were delighted to welcome our valued partners, Sue and Jamie from Hospice UK

They spent a productive week with our team, strengthening our collaboration and witnessing firsthand the impact of hospice and palliative care services in Ethiopia. During their visit, they also visited hospitals to observe the progress of palliative care development and ongoing efforts to expand access to compassionate care.

Sue and Jamie brought a generous donation of colostomy bags collected from Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. They personally collected and transported these essential supplies all the way from the UK to Ethiopia.

Colostomy bags are critically needed by many of our patients. However, they have limited availability, poor accessibility, and are often unaffordable for those we serve. This donation will greatly improve comfort, dignity, and quality of life for patients who depend on these supplies.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sue and Jamie for their dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of patients in need.

🕯️ Honoring Lives, Supporting Families — Hospice Ethiopia Memorial Day

Hospice Ethiopia held a Memorial Day to honor the patients who passed away after their courageous journey with cancer& other life limiting illnesses and to recognize the families who stood beside them, families who faced unimaginable challenges while caring for their loved ones.

At Hospice Ethiopia, we deeply value one of the core principles of palliative care: being patient-centered and family-focused. This year, as part of strengthening our holistic support, we introduced Memorial Day as a way to honor both patients and the families who shared their journey.

As we approached the end of the year, this special gathering was organized with three intentions:
✨ To honor and remember the patients we have lost
✨ To acknowledge and support bereaved families in their grief
✨ To create a space for families to share, reflect, and find comfort in one another

The program featured heartfelt messages from our founder Sister Tsigereda, board member Dr. Yoseph, spiritual leaders from the Orthodox, Protestant, and Muslim religion, patient families and caregivers, as well as the Clinical Department Head Sister Kalkidan and Senior Palliative Care Nurse Sister Flagot. All Hospice Ethiopia staff were also present, creating a warm and compassionate atmosphere of remembrance.
