African Equality Foundation Members Join London Pride 2026 to Champion LGBTQI+ Rights

On 4 July 2026, members of the African Equality Foundation (AEF) proudly participated in London Pride 2026, joining more than 35,000 marchers representing over 600 organisations in one of the UK's largest celebrations of equality and inclusion.

The Pride in London parade made its way from Hyde Park Corner to Whitehall Place via Piccadilly, with more than one million people expected to gather across the capital to celebrate diversity, equality, and the LGBTQI+ community.

Leading the procession was Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan, who joined activists at the front of the march and led the crowd in a spirited chant of "Happy Pride!"

For the African Equality Foundation, participation in London Pride was about more than celebration. It was an opportunity to amplify the voices of LGBTQI+ people across Africa who continue to face stigma, discrimination, criminalisation, persecution, and prosecution because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

As an organisation representing many individuals with lived experience of these challenges, AEF used the platform provided by Pride to raise awareness of the ongoing human rights violations affecting LGBTQI+ communities in many African countries and around the world. While Pride is rightly a celebration of progress, it also serves as a powerful reminder that millions of LGBTQI+ people continue to be denied fundamental rights, dignity, and safety.

Through its participation, the African Equality Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for equality, promoting inclusion, and standing in solidarity with LGBTQI+ communities everywhere. The organisation continues to call for an end to discrimination and violence and for governments to uphold the human rights of all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

17th May marks International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

IDAHOBIT traces its roots back to 17 May 1990, when the World Health Organization (WHO) declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder.

This milestone led, in 2004, to the creation of the day as a means of raising awareness of LGBTQ+ rights violations and to advocate for q***r rights globally.

Today is a reminder that LGBTQ+ individuals must be treated with the same empathy, respect and dignity as anyone else.

Recognise and celebrate the diversity within the LGBTQ+ community, and embrace the uniqueness of each individual.

Big up to Botswana.
A single section of Botswana's Penal Code once made loving someone of the same gender a criminal act. Section 164, a relic of colonial rule, branded LGBTQ people as lawbreakers simply for existing authentically. This week, that section was officially wiped from the books entirely, turning a 2019 court victory into permanent legal reality. The High Court had already ruled the law unconstitutional, declaring that human dignity is harmed when minority groups are marginalized. But removing ghost laws matters as much as court judgments.

This isn't about copying Western values. Anti-sodomy laws were imposed during European colonial rule across Africa and Asia, overriding local traditions. Scrapping these provisions actually undoes Western legal colonialism rather than embracing it. The judges recognized a fundamental truth: you cannot claim to respect human rights while branding entire communities as criminals for who they love. Dignity means your life, relationships, and identity are respected by the state, not criminalized by outdated statutes.

Legal security transforms everything from technically illegal but unenforced to fully decriminalized. LGBTQ Botswanans can now live with reduced fear of blackmail, police harassment, or politicians reviving old laws for moral panic campaigns. This doesn't end discrimination or erase social stigma, but it creates essential groundwork. You cannot build equality on foundations that call someone's existence criminal. Botswana proves not every African nation moves backward on human rights. Sometimes progress means literally deleting homophobia from law books, word by word."

27 years ago today(30 April 2026) the final act of the London nail bomber was a direct attack on our community in our sister venue, The Admiral Duncan. Today we remember Andrea D***s, Nik Moore & John Light whose lives were prematurely taken from us. We remember all those who were injured. We remember those who were and still are affected by this dreadful act of terror. We remember the resilience of our community then and now. In these uncertain times we look to our community, to our friends and to our allies remembering that together we are at our strongest.
Today at 5pm The Admiral Duncan will be holding their annual act of remembrance and then at 18:37pm a minute silence. Wherever you are, please join us in taking a moment in remembrance of this horrific attack and the strength of community 💙
