A great group of children in year 5 from Arunside School in Horsham visited for one of our funded visits. Everyone enjoyed some pond dipping and clay making activities during the day.

Educational access allows for school pupils to visit Mayes Park to learn, understand and become engaged with farming and the environment - funded by Defra.

First volunteer day of 2026 with The Wilder Horsham District project back for some more Rhodi bashing.

Rhododendron ponticum is extremely fast-growing invasive species and once established, native plants and trees struggle to battle this menace unlike the volunteers who showed it no mercy.

Due to the lack of light through its thick canopy, native plants and grasses disappear, animals, insects and butterflies cannot survive, and our important biodiversity is lost.

Rhododendrons are a significant, often preferred, nectar source for bees, especially bumblebees, but they contain toxins (grayanotoxins) that can be harmful. While bumblebees are generally resistant and forage on them safely, this nectar is toxic to honeybees, potentially causing paralysis or death.

Clearing it allows native species to re-establish, creating better habitats for local wildlife.

We've been busy with our nature recovery fund from creating new ponds, scrapes and generally wetting up parts of the land. We’ll be posting more about the project over the next few days.

This is our favourite creation.

Our beautiful new heifer (female) calf with proud mum Peggy.

We had 5 hours of drama / an hour of which was spent convinced Peggy had already given birth and had lost her calf somewhere in the park.

Four of us (with Peggy tagging along with us) and .cook.37819 spent the hour searching for the Houdini calf.

Eventually Peggy clearly had had enough of our stupidity, started to arch her back and have contractions.

We now started to wonder if she had given birth at all and after speaking with we concluded it was time to walk her back to the farm yard where she could be checked.

Whilst discovering that our long inspection gloves could have done with being a few inches longer, we quickly learnt that she hadn’t given birth and her vocals and behaviour were signs she was asking for help. Two hooves were felt but no head or tail.

We decided to call our lovely vets who set off to come and help.

5 mins before Laura from was due to arrive Peggy lay down and out popped her calf.

Peggy and calf doing well. 🥰

Merry Christmas to everyone and lots of love to anyone who has lost someone this year. X

November was a busy month with school visits, repairs and acorn poisoning. Two of the herd were pretty poorly and had to come and help a few times with drenching which is basically helping keep the cows hydrated as the acorns affect the kidneys. Thanks to .cook.37819 for helping.
