General John Archer Elmore Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution The General John Archer Elmore Chapter is part of the Alabama Society, Sons of the American Revolution. Prominent SAR members include sixteen U.S.

The SAR, the largest male lineage organization in the U.S., consists of 50 societies with more than 500 local chapters, several international societies (including Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom), and over 33,000 members. in every major American conflict beginning with the battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, and continuing to the present day, including Operation Desert Storm, Bosnia, and the recent actions in Afghanistan and Iraq. SAR members have received the highest awards America can bestow, including the Medal of Honor. The Chapter is named in honor of General John Archer Elmore who served as a military officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. General Elmore was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia on 21 August 1762 to Archelaus Elmore and Susannah Morris. He joined the Continental Army while still a youth and served in the Virginia Line under Nathanael Greene. Elmore was with Green in his tour through the Carolinas, and was present at the Surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. After the war, he settled in Laurens District, South Carolina, where he was elected to the State Legislature. In 1819, he moved to Autauga, Alabama, where he was again elected as a State Legislator and served there until his death in 1834. Autauga was renamed Elmore County in his honor.

The General John Archer Elmore Chapter was well represented at the Prattville Memorial Day wreath laying ceremony. Chapter members in attendance included Richard Meeks, Morgan Mackey, Kevin Lawrence, Gary Backus, Rick Wells, Ron Dains, and Chuck Cartwright. Ron Dains and Gary Backus presented a wreath on behalf of the General John Archer Elmore Chapter in honor of those who gave their lives in service to our nation.

On May 17, 2026, compatriots Joe Barker, Allen Herrod, and Gary Backus of the General John Archer Elmore Chapter took part in the Charters of Freedom event, presented as part of the Elmore 250 Celebration and held at the Elmore County Historic Courthouse, serving as members of the Alabama Society Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard.

The General John Archer Elmore Chapter was proud to induct three new members during the Charters of Freedom event, presented as part of the Elmore 250 Celebration and held at the Elmore County Historic Courthouse.

We welcome Brian Paul Sexton, William Watson Duke II, and Robert Tobias III to our ranks and look forward to their participation in preserving and promoting the legacy of our Revolutionary War patriot ancestors.

On May 16, 2026, GJAE compatriots Allen Herrod, Gary Backus, and Chuck Cartwright attended a grave-marking ceremony honoring Revolutionary War Patriots John Holland and Randle Jackson at the Old Methodist Cemetery in Sumterville. Allen Herrod and Gary Backus participated in the event as members of the Alabama Society Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard.

The ceremony was sponsored by the Bigbee Valley Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. During the event, the grave of Patriot John Holland was dedicated, while the grave of Patriot Randle Jackson was rededicated. Descendants of both patriots were in attendance for the ceremony.
