ON THIS DAY 83 years ago (11.23.1942), Congress passed the legislation establishing the US Coast Guard Women’s Reserve—the SPARS, opening the door for thousands of women to proudly serve our Nation during WWII.

SPARS filled critical roles stateside, enabling the Coast Guard to meet unprecedented operational demands. Their service, skill, and determination paved the way for generations of servicewomen to follow and shaped the future of the Coast Guard.

We honor their courage, their trailblazing spirit, and their enduring legacy—one that continues to inspire America’s servicewomen today. It is an honor to preserve their stories and legacy of service at the Military Women's Memorial. womensmemorial.org

To the Marines of Michigan—
From the Great Lakes to the front lines, you’ve carried the spirit of the Corps with pride, grit, and unwavering resolve.
On this 250th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps, we raise our glasses to your service, your sacrifice, and your strength.
You’ve stood tall in battle, led with honor in peace, and continued to serve your communities long after the uniform was hung up.
Thank you for embodying the very best of what it means to be a Marine.
Here’s to 250 years of Semper Fidelis—and to every Michigan Marine who’s helped write that legacy.
Oorah, and Happy Birthday, Marines!

On September 8, 1949, Sgt. Annie Neal Graham stepped into history as the first African American woman to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. At a time when both racial and gender barriers loomed large, she chose the path of service—not for ease, but for honor and service to her country.
Stationed at Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C., Sgt. Graham served with distinction in the Personnel, Publications, and Special Orders departments.
