Let’s break our addiction to plastics.
Buying items in plastic containers may feel convenient—but that convenience comes at the cost of our environment.

Microplastics, which come from plastics, are showing up in Belize’s sea, rivers, seafood, and even drinking water. They harm our reefs, our health, and our future.

💙 The solution starts with us. When we plan ahead, we don’t need the so-called convenience of plastics. By avoiding plastic products, we’re not inconvenienced—we’re protecting our environment.

Let’s keep working together to reduce, reuse, and recycle—but we must also face the reality that not all waste can be avoided. The residual waste we generate still needs to be managed, and much of it ends up in landfills and dumpsites. While dumpsites may seem like a solution, they continue to pose serious risks to our environment and health.

Recently, a member of our association shared a video of the Corozal dumpsite, located just a quarter mile from a residential area. She described how trash is burned there continuously, and depending on the wind, smoke often drifts into nearby neighborhoods. This is deeply concerning, as dumpsites can attract mosquitoes and rats that spread diseases such as dengue. The ongoing burning of waste also releases toxic fumes, endangering the air we all breathe.

We urge every Belizean to reflect on our “throw-away” culture. Remember: there is no true “away.” Everything we use eventually becomes waste. Let’s take responsibility for our choices, support better waste management, and protect our communities for the future.
