Good reasons to join

There are plenty of good reasons to join BFAWU and here are some of the best ones

Your voice

BFAWU gives you a strong voice at work. Without a union, you are less likely to have a say in your terms and conditions and how your employer operates.

Protection at work

By ensuring that union members have strong and effective representation, BFAWU is able to protect people at work and help resolve issues before they become major problems. BFAWU ensures that members are aware of their rights in the workplace.

Better conditions

Holiday entitlement, good pension provision and arrangements for time off work are just some of the things BFAWU can improve. By negotiating with employers, BFAWU is able to make life at work better.

Fairness at work

Union workplaces are fairer workplaces and are much more likely to have family-friendly policies.

By negotiating with employers, unions are able to secure better deals for members on issues such as career opportunities, flexible working arrangements and general support for family responsibilities. In short, unions help you achieve a work-life balance without being penalised for it .

Legal & accident cover

BFAWU legal service wins millions in compensation each year for members and their families. As an BFAWU member, the legal service is entirely free – you don’t pay a penny. £37,500 settlement for baker who developed occupational asthma 👇

After developing a lifelong lung condition linked to flour dust exposure at work, a bakery worker secured compensation with the support of her union, BFAWU, and Thompsons Solicitors.

Importantly, the claim also led to workplace safety improvements designed to better protect other workers from harm. 🛑

👏 Thanks to her determination to speak out, changes have been made that could help prevent others from developing the same condition in the future; a reminder that securing justice for one worker can also help make workplaces safer for others.

Philip Liptrot, Head of Personal Injury at Thompsons Solicitors, said: "Occupational asthma can have a serious and lasting impact on people's lives, but it is often preventable.

Employers have a legal duty to properly assess and control exposure to flour dust and take steps to protect their workforce from avoidable harm.”

HSE Inspections Tackling Exposure To Flour Dust In Bakeries
HSE is currently carrying out a series of inspections at large bakeries across Great Britain.

Inspectors are checking that employers are protecting workers from flour dust – one of the most common causes of occupational asthma in the country.
Inspectors will assess compliance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH), focusing on whether employers have implemented effective controls to manage exposure.
You can:
• read HSE's guidance on controlling flour dust in bakeries

The workplace rep (or steward) plays a vital role in BFAWU.

BFAWU workplace reps tend to be the first and main point of contact with the union. They are trained to provide advice and support to members, to build and maintain a strong workplace BFAWU, and to work with BFAWU colleagues to protect members interests at work.

When a member is facing an individual problem at work they are encouraged to speak to their rep. The rep can then help by exploring the options and agreeing next steps for finding a solution.

📢 THEY SAID NO — OUR FUTURE SAYS YES

The company has refused to recognise a trade union — even though workers were never asked whether they wanted one.

Refusal doesn’t stop organising. It starts it.

👉 UK law protects union activity.
It’s unlawful to victimise or discriminate against anyone for:

- joining a union
- talking to a union
- organising for union recognition

If you want a real collective voice and protection as a worker - now is the time.

The UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is actively inspecting large bakeries to protect workers from combustible flour dust and occupational asthma. The Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) campaigns to improve safety and secures compensation for members who develop respiratory illnesses. While "flour explosions" are a recognized combustible dust hazard in food manufacturing, the primary challenge union representatives and safety regulators focus on day-to-day is flour dust exposure. Airborne dust is a leading cause of "baker's asthma" (occupational asthma).
