On April 20, 1995, Daniel Muehlhausen graduated from the CHP academy in West Sacramento. He was issued badge number 13933 and assigned to the Indio area. Just over two years later, on June 1, 1997, he was killed in an on duty, head on collision with an errant driver. Both vehicles were consumed by fire. This year his effects, including the badge he was wearing when he died, came onto the auction block. The CHP Museum, with the help of a small group of retirees and friends, raised enough funds to be able to make the winning bids on five separate lots of Officer Muehlhausen’s possessions.
On August 21, 2026, an honor guard of two officers from CHP’s Southern Division, accompanied by two sergeants from the Indio office, escorted those items from Los Angeles to the CHP Academy. In a brief ceremony held at the memorial fountain, his burned badge, a replacement badge presented to his family, the flag that covered his coffin, and his uniform campaign hat were presented to Rick Mattos from the CHP Museum and Academy Commander Chief Joe Diaz, to be forever preserved.
