💯 What a fantastic night on Saturday!

More than 160 people gathered at Harrow Weald Memorial Club for our ACT Quiz Night, with 18 teams taking part in an incredible quiz hosted by the Antonio Leo and Pat Mclaughlin.

📝 There were eight different categories, covering everything from cartoons and 90s music to current affairs and general knowledge. There were plenty of laughs, a lot of fun and some serious competition!

In the end, there could only be one winning team: The Halloumi Mafiosi. They won a cash prize but generously decided to donate it back to the charity. Thank you so much! There were also prizes for the runners-up.

🍀 Alongside the quiz, we also held a raffle, with some fantastic prizes up for grabs, including an iPad, a luxury watch, two Arsenal match tickets, a hamper filled with delicious Italian food, a case of Prosecco and two cases of Birra Moretti. Thanks to everyone who donated prizes: C. Carnevale, Mr George Cassar, Delicatezza, Heineken UK and Mr Carmine Carnevale.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, took part and helped make the evening such a success. Your continued support means so much to us and helps us make a real difference through our work supporting cancer research.

👏 We’d also like to give a special mention to our wonderful trustee Dario for putting so much thought and effort into organising such a fantastic event.

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁?

💉 A new cancer vaccine developed by Moderna and Merck has shown encouraging results in a clinical trial involving more than 1,000 people with high-risk melanoma.

👤 Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer that develops in pigment-producing cells and can spread quickly if not treated.
The personalised vaccine is designed using genetic information from each patient’s tumour, helping the immune system recognise and target cancer cells.

💛 Recently announced results suggest the vaccine, combined with immunotherapy, could reduce the risk of melanoma returning or spreading.

🫵 The vaccine is still being studied, but the findings offer another promising step towards more personalised cancer treatment.

🧒 Last week, our Trustee Clare and her husband Mick had the pleasure of attending a special reception at The Institute of Cancer Research to mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

🎗️ The evening highlighted the challenges faced by childhood cancer research, which can receive less funding because childhood cancers are relatively rare. It also demonstrated the important role that smaller, family-led charities can play by providing flexible funding for innovative, early-stage research.

💛 Professor Sally George shared the moving story of how the Siobhan's Superstar Legacy provided around £100,000 over three to four years, helping to equip her laboratory and fund a technician whose role continues today. Her story showed the lasting impact that charitable donations can have on research and the people working to improve outcomes for children with cancer.

🌈 The evening was a powerful reminder that organisations such as Arcobaleno Cancer Trust can make a meaningful and lasting difference to cancer research, patients and families.

🏥 Catherine, Princess of Wales, made an unannounced visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital in London on Friday 11 September, the hospital where she received cancer treatment in 2024.

During her visit, she met patients currently undergoing treatment and spoke with members of the hospital team about the care and support they provide. Catherine also visited the hospital’s holistic care service, which supports patients’ physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing alongside their medical treatment.

🩺 The Princess’s visit highlighted the dedication of the healthcare professionals working at the Royal Marsden and the importance of cancer treatment, research and patient care.

At Arcobaleno Cancer Trust, we have a special connection with the Royal Marsden. People very close to us have received treatment there, and over the years we have also funded several cancer research programmes at the hospital.

💜 We would like to thank the Princess of Wales for using her platform to highlight the importance of cancer treatment and research, holistic care, and the dedicated people working every day to care for cancer patients.

🤝 Importantly, holistic care works alongside conventional cancer treatment, helping patients feel supported as a whole person.

🏥 Cancer hospitals offer holistic care as part of their approach to caring for people affected by cancer, and we are proud to contribute to projects that help make this possible.

🌈 At Arcobaleno Cancer Trust, we are happy to support their work and contribute to projects that focus on the wellbeing of patients beyond their medical treatment.

👨🏻‍⚕️ We are proud to have supported Preventing Breast Cancer Through Breastfeeding: Identifying Early Genetic Risk Markers with a grant of £5,000.

👩🏽 Led by Professor James Flanagan at Imperial College London, this pioneering research project will analyse breast cells from the breastmilk of 300 healthy women to better understand how breastfeeding may help reduce the risk of breast cancer. By identifying the earliest genetic changes linked to the disease, the research could help shape future prevention strategies and lead to new, non-invasive ways of assessing breast cancer risk in younger women.

💜 This research has the potential to improve our understanding of breast cancer prevention and bring us one step closer to a future where fewer people are affected by the disease.
