Atoll Volunteers (Maldives) Local NGO building a stronger community across the Lhaviyani Atoll through sustainable projects. Naifaru balan aadhe! See you at Naifaru!

We offer a range of local volunteering programs and we are dedicated to securing the most exciting and beneficial projects for our volunteers while still making sure that as much attention and funding as possible is funneled directly into our community. Most importantly, we believe that volunteering does not need to be all work and no play, and that the most rewarding of volunteer programs allow y

ou to enjoy your placement at the same time as giving back to our community. Our community is desperate for your help in so many ways but in return we promise to welcome you into our lives as a friend, show you the best the "real" Maldives has to offer and be on hand to support you in any way we can. We may not be able to offer you the luxuries of the 5 star hotels but the natural beauty of the Maldives is not limited to 5 star resorts - idyllic beaches, uninhabited islands and some of the world's most beautiful coral reefs, teeming with marine life of every colour are yours to explore. We provide accomodation in our volunteer houses which is modern but simple and clean, and similar to what you would expect to find in a European beach resort. Our mission is to ensure that you leave the Maldives having experienced the warmth and friendliness of our people, explored our islands, been amazed at the beauty of our marine life and hopefully come to love the little islands that we call home. We have extensive experience in placing volunteers in exciting projects that have seen our volunteers partake in activities as varied as turtle conservation, teaching, community organizing, various sports programmes and much, much more. We endeavour to provide the best volunteering experience that the Maldives has to offer and have a range of customized placements which have been planned in cooperation with our schools, hospitals, sporting teams and local community of over 5000 people to offer a wide variety of volunteering options. We believe in

- Building a stronger community through sustainable projects
- Engaging the community in the work of our volunteers to secure a learning process that is
beneficial for both parties
- Building a better future for our community with special attention on creating a better life for
our youth so that they may have better employment opportunities and the chance to pursue
their dreams!
- Bringing people of all nationalities and cultures together with a common goal
- Low administration costs – to ensure as much funding as possible is given back to our
community

We actively support our community and run a range of programmes and individual projects at any time, so we always looking for new volunteers to help us in our work. Vision

It is our vision to build a stronger community, not just on our island of Naifaru, but on all the islands across our atoll - Lhivayani, and in the future; all of the 1192 islands that make up the Maldives. We strive to make a difference in a number of areas through community inclusion built on awareness programs, hiring locally, close cooperation with local schools and community organisations as well as an interest in bringing international volunteers in to teach different views and methods that can help make a more sustainable community. History

We are a young organization which was officially founded in early 2012 after more than 4 years of experience running volunteer programs on Lhivayani Atoll on behalf of other international volunteer organizations in the Maldives through our NGO. We chose to launch our own volunteer programme since the various international partnerships that we were previously involved in all had extremely high administration costs, which meant that only a small fraction of the volunteer’s placement fees would actually reach our organisation and the island community - and in some cases the community found themselves needing to subsidise the volunteers stay as the funding that was received was simply not enough to cover basic accomodation and food costs. So, we decided to make a change for the better - one of the most frequently asked questions by potential volunteers is "Where does my money go?" and we wanted to ensure that it really was reaching the community it was intended for - at Atoll Volunteers we keep our running costs to a minimum, with no international offices or international staff, we keep our advertising and administration costs as low as possible and have a transparency-policy which means that as our volunteer you will be able to monitor what your funds cover - any funds remaining from your program fee go directly into local community projects. Not only are our fees lower, and more transparent than most other Maldivian NGOs, but we were also the first NGO in the Maldives registered to bring in foreign volunteers. This means that you can be sure that we know what we’re doing and that our visa application process is smooth and quick. However, as all our full time employees are local Maldivians please do excuse us if our English, which is our second language, is not always perfect! So come and join us for the chance to experience the ultimate in island volunteering; but do it knowing that you will help make a real difference in our community! We have experience in volunteering efforts for over ten years and have received more than hundred volunteers last year. We make an extra effort to assist volunteers, working with them personally onsite and provide 24 hour local support (in person and on phone). In addition, we take volunteers to picnics, fishing trips and many other activities that would allow close interaction with the local population

✨Volunteer Spotlight ✨

Meet Auriane 👋

Program : Turtle Rehabilitation Program

is from France and she volunteered with for a total of 2 weeks.

She shares her experience below:
"Volunteering at Atoll volunteers in the sea turtle rehabilitation program has been one of the most beautiful and enriching experiences of my life!

First and foremost, it was an opportunity for me to discover not only a new culture in the Maldives but also the marine world. I felt like a newborn rediscovering the world through snorkeling, the various presentations organized by the staff, and the many conversations we all shared together.

I loved meeting each turtle at the center and getting to know their unique personalities. I never imagined that each turtle could have such a distinct character!

What also made this experience so special was sharing it with other volunteers, alongside the guidance and support of the staff members, who were patient and truly passionate about their work. I will never forget all the people I met, coming from all around the world.

I especially appreciated the afternoon activities, which allowed us to enjoy time together as a
community.

Last but not least, what mattered a lot to me was feeling useful and being able to contribute to a mission I truly cared about, while also becoming more aware of marine environmental issues. With Atoll Volunteer, everyone contributes in their own way and at their own pace, with respect for individual fears or hesitations — and always with the support needed to overcome them.

I return from this experience changed, and it will forever be etched in my heart. Thank you to everyone for what you brought into my life!"

Have you ever dreamed of restoring coral reefs, diving with sea turtles, and living on a tropical island surrounded by ocean lovers just like you? 💙🌊

Last month, one of our incredible volunteers, did just that and her story is too good not to share.

Her words speak for themselves 👇

"Since I was younger, I've had a fascination with sea life and have always wanted to help make a difference with the conservation and restoration of our ocean.

Having spent the last month in Naifaru working with and , I am proud that I have started contributing towards these efforts.
I've learnt so much doing coral restoration during my time here, including how to build a coral tree, maintenance on coral garden frames and improving my fish ID (which was pretty much non existent before this trip 😂).

Lizzy has been an amazing instructor, teaching me how to dive so I am now PADI certified!! 🎉 Her passion and determination to restore our reefs is inspiring and I thoroughly enjoyed working with her to care for the coral garden established in Naifaru, surveying the reefs and removing rubbish.
Diving and seeing all the marine life in its natural habitat right in front of me rather than on a documentary was breathtaking and surreal. It really is an eye opening experience!

But what really made this trip so incredible were the people I met along the way, both staff and volunteers. Everyone was so bubbly, welcoming and passionate about their work but also made free afternoons and evenings fun with movies on the beach, volleyball games, uno nights and so much more, the list would go on forever!
I had a fantastic month working with the Atoll Marine Centre and Aqua Dive teams and I have made memories to last a lifetime!

I could not recommend this experience enough, and wish I could have stayed forever! "

Ever wondered what a day in the life of an Atoll Volunteer looks like? 🐢🌊 From snorkeling amid vibrant coral gardens to hands-on turtle care, our volunteers dive into a world of discovery, passion, and purpose.

Here’s one of our amazing intern volunteers, , sharing their unforgettable journey—swipe through to see the moments that made her time with us truly magical:

"Since I was a child, I’ve always been fascinated by the ocean. Through my travels, I got to see just how breathtaking and mysterious these places can be. I’ve always wanted to explore more and understand the world that drew me in so deeply.

This internship gave me a completely new perspective on the marine world, one that’s much more grounded in today’s reality. I became aware of how fragile these ecosystems are, the threats they’re facing, and most importantly, the actions we can take to help protect them.

I learned so much about corals, how they function, their importance in marine ecosystems, the challenges they face, and how we can actively help restore them. It wasn’t just theory, it was hands-on work : reef cleanups, monitoring, nursery maintenance. Learning by doing made all the difference.

What truly made this experience special was the people. Working with Lizzie and the other volunteers was a chance to share, to speak English every day, and to discover new perspectives and cultures. It was incredibly enriching on a human level.

And of course, there was diving. During this month, I earned my Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver certifications. It was intense at times, but also deeply rewarding. It brought me even closer to the underwater world I love so much.

Now, I see the ocean differently. I still admire its beauty, but I’m also aware of its fragility. And more than ever, I want to keep working to protect it."

Meet Henry 🖐

Volunteering Program: Coral Restoration.

Henry is from the UK, who volunteered with us for 4 weeks through WorkingAbroad Projects on our coral restoration volunteer program in partnership with Atoll Marine Centre and AquaAqua World

Read below to hear about his volunteering experience 👇

"The four weeks I spent in Naifaru were some of the best of my life.

As a part of the coral restoration program, diving was a large part of my day-to-day life, which was so special, particularly when combined with the work I was doing on the coral garden.

I loved the escape from reality, the beautiful surroundings and perfect weather but the best was the people….

The local people are so kind, welcoming and always want a game of volleyball. And I have made some great friends with other volunteers from all over the world. The staff of AMC are amazing and have so much passion for conservation while being so fun which leads to so many great memories which will stay with me for a lifetime. Teg has so much positive energy and helped with organisation from before I even got on the flight, and while I was there she made every day feel special and fun. However most days I spent diving and working with Lizzie, I loved the time we worked together, and her experience and great personality made my time there so rewarding.

This experience has opened so many doors for me and made me see things in a new light, as well as having left me with some of my favourite memories.

Thank you for everything!"
