You have the power to make a difference 🌟

Jane heard from so many people who felt overwhelmed by the challenges facing our world. Her response never wavered: there is still hope, but only if we take action.

Feeling stuck on where to start? Jane had an answer for that, too. With every choice you make, think of the potential to make an impact on our planet.

These choices can be small. You can opt to make your next meal meatless. You can take the time to walk instead of drive, or plan to carpool instead. You can let a stranger go in front of you in line. Jane would argue that these small acts of kindness will make you feel good, and make you want to do more. Maybe next you will plan a community clean-up, organise a food drive, or foster a rescued animal. Maybe after that, you will inspire a group of people to come together and do the same.

At the Jane Goodall Institute Australia, we feel so honoured to uphold Dr Jane Goodall's vision of inspiring hope and transforming that into action. If you feel inspired to be part of it, join Jane's Movement, a community of people across Australia turning small everyday choices into lasting change for animals, people and the planet.

Every person who joins makes the movement stronger. 💚

Meet Leila. 💛

She's playful, she's curious, and she's growing stronger every single day at JGI's Tchimpounga sanctuary.

Not long ago, her story looked very different. A retired park ranger, a man who had spent his career protecting the forests of Conkouati-Douli National Park, spotted someone carrying a tiny infant chimpanzee near the park's edge. He didn't look away. He picked up the phone and called , a French NGO and managing partner of the national park. They called us. 🌳📞

Within hours, a JGI RoC team was on the road to bring her home. She was so exhausted from everything she'd been through that she fell asleep in the arms of one of our veterinarians and stayed there, safe, for the entire journey back to Tchimpounga.

The team named her Leila. Today she's surrounded by human surrogate caretakers who hold her, feed her, and watch over her 24 hours a day, the closest thing to the mother she lost. And little by little, her personality is beginning to shine through. 🫶✨

One phone call. One team that answered it. One life changed.

Every chimpanzee at Tchimpounga has a story like Leila's, and every one of them is here because someone chose to care. You can be part of the next rescue. Join Jane's Movement and carry forward the work Jane devoted her life to 👉 https://join-janes-movement.raiselysite.com/

You can also symbolically adopt a chimpanzee like Leila through our Chimpanzee Guardian program, and support her care every step of the way.

The Jane Goodall Institute does not endorse handling or close proximity to wildlife. This represents a sanctuary context with trained professionals.

What exactly is a chimpanzee pant hoot? 🐵🎶

The pant hoot is one of the most recognizable vocalizations in the animal kingdom. Chimpanzees use these powerful calls to communicate over long distances, including staying in touch with their community, announcing their location, and expressing excitement during social interactions.

Watch Dr. Jane Goodall demonstrate a pant hoot and discover one more way chimpanzees reveal the complexity of their social lives. After this tutorial, do you think you could answer her call?

Thanks to the Jane Goodall Institute’s long-term research at Gombe, we continue to deepen our understanding of chimpanzee behavior and the importance of protecting the forests they call home. 🌍

Nelson Mandela was a person that Jane returned to time and time again as a hero, and an example of the indomitable human spirit. In fact at a 2013 lecture event at Lafayette College, she said: "[One of my] reason[s] for hope is this indomitable human spirit, the people who tackle seemingly impossible tasks and won't give up. Iconic figures like Nelson Mandela, who came out of 17 years of hard, physical labor, 23 years of being in prison, with this amazing ability to forgive so that he was able to lead his nation out of the evil, evil regime of apartheid without a bloodbath."

In honor of Nelson Mandela's birthday week, we remember Jane's words and admiration. To Jane, having an indomitable human spirit meant not only making it through difficult times, but finding the good on the other side. 🕊️

Figures like Nelson Mandela, who shared in Jane's desire for world peace, remind us that positive change has to start with us.

How many snake species live in Gombe National Park, the site of JGI's ongoing chimpanzee research? 🐍🤔

Over 30 species have been found in Gombe National Park, and there may be many more we haven't yet seen and are excited to discover through human observation, camera traps, and other technologies! 📸

This eastern vine snake is one beautiful example of a snake species found in the park. Like other vine/twig snakes, it has evolved a perfect camouflage to mimic the winding vines found on trees across Africa. Because they are so well hidden and are typically placid by nature, they rarely come into contact with humans. However, when provoked, they can inflate their necks to look larger and flick their bright orange tongues in an impressive and intimidating display. 😮🌿

Snakes get a bad rap, but they play an important part in the ecosystem, controlling pest populations and serving as an important source of food for larger birds and other animals. 🐁🦉

Researchers and field assistants at JGI's Gombe Stream Research Center are learning more about Gombe's biodiversity every day! Keep checking back for more fun facts about this and the rest of our work. 🌳🔍

Jane Goodall: wild chimpanzee researcher and defender of rats!

Dr. Jane Goodall always said she was born loving animals, and rats were far from the exception. Jane even carried a rat stuffed animal, called Ratty, which she would use as an example of how intelligent different animals can be. Giant pouched rats like Ratty are so lightweight, quick, and trainable that they can detect landmines and tuberculosis, work that saves lives!

We are forever grateful to Jane for showing us that humans are a part of the animal kingdom, not apart from it, a vision that inspires JGI's conservation work today. It is our shared responsibility to build a world where every animal can thrive!

Today is World Chimpanzee Day, a day that celebrates Dr Jane Goodall's groundbreaking research and the global movement she inspired to protect people, animals and the environment.
Jane has always reminded us that hope is inspired by action.
That's why we're proud to invite you to join Jane's Movement, the Jane Goodall Institute Australia's monthly giving community.

This is more than a fundraising campaign. It's an invitation to be part of something lasting, a community of people who care enough to show up, month after month, for chimpanzees, for forests, and for the future of our planet.

You can join from just $1 a month. Because the real power isn't the size of the gift, it's the commitment to give regularly. Small monthly donations, combined across a community of supporters, create the sustainable funding we need to:

🐵 Protect endangered chimpanzees in the wild
🌳 Restore critical forest habitats
🤝 Empower local communities across Africa
🌏 Inspire Australia's next generation of environmental leaders through our Education for Earth and Roots & Shoots programs.

Together, our goal is to build a community of monthly supporters providing $50,000 in sustainable annual funding. Every dollar. Every month. Every member makes a difference.
If Jane's work has ever inspired you, her courage, her curiosity, her unshakeable belief that one person (or one chimpanzee) can change the world, we'd love for you to be part of this movement.

👉 Join Jane's Movement today. Become a monthly supporter.

How many chimpanzees can you spot? 🔍👁️

At JGI's Gombe Stream Research Center in Tanzania, we've been studying the same group of chimpanzees, uninterrupted, for decades. This on July 14 marks 66 years! In this time, we've learned so much about the chimpanzee families that call Gombe home — especially the famous "F Family" and "G Family." 🌳✨

In this clip captured by Gombe graduate students Sims Patton and Abigail McClain from , we can see alpha male Fudge from the "F Family" and members of the "G Family" resting and playing in a large tree in the Busambo valley before a rainstorm. This time together solidifies bonds between members of the troop. 🫶🌿

Grooming is about much more than keeping clean. It is one of the most important ways chimpanzees build and maintain relationships. 🤝

As chimpanzees groom one another, they remove dirt and parasites while strengthening social bonds, reducing tension, and reinforcing trust within their community. These interactions play a vital role in chimpanzee society. 🐵

Young chimpanzees are often right in the middle of the action, climbing over their mothers and watching as they groom others. Through these close interactions, infants begin learning the social skills and behaviors they will use throughout their lives. 💚

Thanks to continued support of long-term research at JGI’s Gombe Stream Research Center, scientists are still uncovering new insights into chimpanzee behavior more than 65 years after Dr. Jane Goodall first arrived. 🌿
