Peer Diversity Educators PDE is stationed by the UWEC Equity, Diversity, & Inclusivity department.

Peer Diversity Educators strives to provide equitable, diverse, and inclusive information that not only educates but also transforms minds towards a compassionate and empathetic future. PDE utilizes facilitated programs on Diversity, Equity, & Inclusivity to not only educate but open minds on the many social issues of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and many other forms of bigotry. Our go

al is to create a more inclusive and restorative future for all peoples as they come into Higher Education and leave with a greater understanding of the diverse world around them.

A statement from our team:

Over the past weekend, two photos were released about a current student’s recent Snapchat private story name that was and is racist. The student has the right to privacy and will not be named, however, the photos are in the possession of many students, so feel free to reach out to your friends.

For many students, this is not something new. We have seen it before from racial slurs on a student’s dorm door to the football player incident. And those have been the most public. Incidents like these happen daily against people of color.

Whether an individual incident or a public one revealed by the student body, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire continues to allow our campus environment to perpetuate racial violence & abhorrent discriminatory rhetoric against students. This is not a safe place for students and faculty of color, and those in charge have done nothing impactful to change this fact.

This most recent incident continues to unearth a culture of racism that has been allowed to rear its ugly head from time to time because nothing ever happens. But enough is enough. The administration has promised to help students of color in the past, but their promises are never kept students want to see decisive action and we as a Student-Led group agree that disciplinary sanctions come up by the student body should be taken seriously. What happened this past weekend was not the first and will not be the last, and it was not an accident. This was the ugly face of our student population coming out of the shadows again.

As a team, we value an inclusive campus experience for all students, but we cannot achieve our goals for a compassionate and equitable world when incidents like these continue to happen without repercussions for racists. And that is what exactly happened: a student did something racist because they felt comfortable enough to make harmful “jokes” and disguise it as free speech. This is hate speech, and although everyone has the right to say what they want, they are not free from consequence. Rhetoric and actions like these happen all the time and are happening currently. This was no accident nor mistake; this was an intentional violent act. This student knows what they did was wrong but did it regardless, and it cannot, should not, and will not be brushed under the rug. It is time for action, fulfilment of empty promises, and everlasting change.

We want to see change beginning with the demands put together by student leaders on UW-Eau Claire campus for campus administration to adopt into the Blugold Code of Conduct to include the following:

- WI Code 947.013 (Specifically related to harassment)

- Codes in place to prohibit defamatory language and language that incites violence

- It is vital that these codes are put in place immediately, to ensure a safe and inviting space for marginalized individuals that are UWEC students, faculties, and guests. Next steps set the precedent for what the University will allow, as acceptable behavior, as this has not been the first instance of racist behavior going unattended.

- Changing the Blugold Code of Conduct, reduces the risk of these incidents occurring, and holds individuals accountable, for behavior that will not be tolerated by the University.

Further, we urge all those seeing this to take part in whatever way they can to amplify student voices, especially those of students of color. THe following is a link to the student-organized protest this Thursday. Please follow the link, read through the demands, and follow the instructions asked by the organizers to help call for structural change on UW-Eau Claire Campus: https://fb.me/e/3WIcFXYcr

For all of us to fly, the skies must be safe.

Sincerely,

Peer Diversity Educators
