⭐ Member Spotlight | March ⭐

The ADACC Network is delighted to highlight Executive Committee Member, Dr. Jeff Williamson, as our March Spotlight honoree.

Dr. Jeff Williamson is an Academic Faculty Physician and Section Chief at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He is an internationally known geriatrician and clinical trialist whose research focuses on the relationships between chronic diseases-such as hypertension and diabetes- and the preservation of brain health and physical function in aging adults. As Director of the Wake Forest Center for Healthcare Innovation and co-leader of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, he has led large-scale NIH-funded studies involving tens of thousands of older adults, advancing understanding of cognitive decline prevention and aging-related loss of independence. His work has significantly shaped modern approaches to Alzheimer’s prevention, mobility, and frailty research, and the inclusion of older adults in clinical trials, reinforcing his role as national leader in aging science.

Two members of the ADACC Network, Drs. Ambar Kulshreshtha and Nicole Fowler, collaborated with colleagues on a recent study of 324 older adults in primary care. The study found that over 50% had mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 8% had Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias (ADRD)—without a formal diagnosis. These individuals also carried a heavier burden of chronic conditions and medications, including higher use of anticholinergics, which can worsen cognition.

🔍 Cognitive decline often goes undetected in older adults with multiple chronic conditions—highlighting the urgent need for integrated screening and safer prescribing in primary care.
