Officer Chaves is being honored for his exceptional dedication, intuition, and compassion in assisting a domestic violence victim, ultimately leading to the apprehension of a dangerous offender.

On October 23, 2024, while investigating an unrelated incident at a Kailua-Kona clothing store, Officer Chaves recognized a patron as a previous domestic violence victim. His keen observation skills immediately detected signs of distress, and upon further inquiry, he noticed visible injuries on her face. Despite her reluctance, his words resonated with her, and she later reached out for help.

That evening, in a safe setting, the victim confided in Officer Chaves, revealing harrowing details of her recent ordeal. She had been held captive, threatened with a hammer, and subjected to constant surveillance by her abuser. As she recounted her experience, the suspect attempted to call her multiple times, reinforcing her fear of retaliation.

Determined to secure justice and ensure her safety, Officer Chaves worked closely with the Prosecutor’s Office and the Area II Juvenile Aid Section. His relentless efforts led to the suspect’s arrest on multiple serious charges, including kidnapping and assault. Initially held on $326,000 bail, the suspect’s bail was later revoked, keeping him in custody pending trial.

Thanks to Officer Chaves' unwavering commitment to protecting victims of domestic violence, he not only gained this victim’s trust but potentially saved her from further harm. His actions exemplify the courage and compassion that define law enforcement at its best.
