San Diego Balboa Lab This page is dedicated to interests pertaining to balboa dance events in San Diego, which are shared and discussed in the San Diego Balboa Lab community group.

WHAT IS BALBOA? Balboa is a partnership dance founded in early 1920s in Newport Beach of Southern California. Through influences from swing dance styles in the greater Los Angeles and the Orange County, balboa evolved into a combination of the close embrace connection, intricate footwork, and breakaways movements. Balboa dancers preferring the close embrace partnership describe their experience as

graceful, comfortable and in sync with their partner. Those that prefer breaking away often describe their dance as energetic, low impact, and elegant. It is an exciting dance that brings joy to the swing dance community; it allows massive improvement in dance vocabulary and technique, and is a dance enjoyed to varying tempos of big bands and small instrumental ensembles. HOW DO DANCE CLASSES WORK? Balboa is a role-based dance. Group classes allow you sign up as a lead or follow, and you are expected to develop the skills of that role for the remainder of that class time. Bringing a partner is optional, but dancers are expected to rotate in class so that they can introduce each other, learn from each other, and bring each other closer into the dance community. WHICH LEVEL IS RIGHT FOR ME? A beginner balboa class is appropriate for those that have not danced any form of swing or balboa. Tasters and drop in classes allow students to try out the dance before committing to a full month series. You are welcome to take the beginner class multiple times until you are confident in advancing to the next level. If you are interested in weekly progressive classes, please attend one of the weekly dance venues mentioned in the San Diego Balboa Lab discussion group below. Progressive classes help you retain class material and will better prepare you for your journey to the next level. An intermediate balboa class is offered to students that are comfortable with the fundamentals of basic footwork, connection and at least one type of styling in closed and open positions. Students that have taken at least four group classes and have accumulated at least ten hours of social dance time are qualified to tackle the intermediate lessons with their peers.

We are passionate about swing dancing. We traveled and sought for it, and we want more of it here. Who knew that our passion for jazz music and swing dancing was going to set forth a new movement of bright eyed dancers learning the Balboa. What started as a small group practice through word of mouth now touched more lives than we could have possibly imagined. We’re now inviting you to write the next chapter of our story.
