Plastic-Free Me Spreading awareness of our global plastic pollution issue and empowering individuals to live a more plastic-free lifestyle.

The Problem:
It is estimated that half of the plastic that the world consumes, is used just once. This equates to around 150 million tonnes of plastic every year being used for just a few minutes. A significant proportion of plastic ends up in our ocean, and is gradually broken up into tiny pieces by the currents. Turtles, fish, seals, dolphins and other marine life ingest the harmful plastics. Sc

ientists say that 'death by plastic' in marine animals is increasing at an unprecedented rate. Toxic chemicals are also often released as the plastics are broken down in the ocean, which make their way up the food chain and into our dinner. The Challenge:
Cut out your disposable plastics! Reducing the amount of disposable plastic you consume on a daily basis, with simple & obtainable alternatives. Together, making small changes to our lifestyles and encouraging those around us to do the same, will have a huge impact on the natural environment. The Results:
Plastic pollution is a global issue. Only by making an effort as a global population can we hope to tackle the problem. In the UK, the number of single-use plastic bags given out by supermarkets dropped a whopping 85% in the first six months of the 5p bag charge. That's an enormous 6.5 billion fewer plastic bags in circulation than the previous year. Small changes really do give positive results; so join the challenge, spread the word and go plastic-free!

🐣Recycle right this Easter!! 🐰

Did you know aluminium is one of the most recycled materials ever? When it's recycled it doesn't lose any of its properties or qualities and therefore isn't downcycled like plastic or paper, for example. Most aluminium products out there contain some recycled aluminium already.

So this Easter, make sure you recycle every last bit of your chocolate wrapping. Here's how to do it right:
♻️ Eat as much chocolate as you possibly can!!!
♻️ But make sure it's palm oil free (solid Lindt chocolate is the palm oil free I believe, as is Darrell Lea chocolate. Cadbury and Nestle use lots of palm oil unfortunately 😪)
♻️ Collect all the foil wrapping
♻️ Screw them all up together into the biggest ball possible (if it's too small it'll slip through the cracks and won't get recycled)
♻️ Lob it straight into your home recycling bin

Happy Easter (for the weekend!) everyone💚

Designers and environmentalists have slammed Coca-Cola's efforts to tackle plastic pollution as "greenwashing" and "a huge step backwards in sustainability".

Let’s talk about PPE - what plastic-free or low plastic solutions have found to keeping yourself safe from COVID that are also good for the environment? Please share them with us so we can share them too!

Sorry to share such sad images but with disposables masks and gloves quickly becoming some of the most common single use plastics in our oceans harming wildlife, we must talk about it. If anyone knows photo credit please tag. 🌊

Always celebrating the diversity of our oceans...

“The coelacanth is a rare marine fish that is a living representative of an ancient lineage of formerly common fishes. This and the closely related Indonesian coelacanth have several unique physical characteristics that few or no other living species have. Coelacanths were thought to be extinct for tens of millions of years, so the discovery of this species in the 1930s and the subsequent discovery of the Indonesian coelacanth in the 1990s represent some of the most significant natural history discoveries of recent times.

Coelacanths live in deep waters off of southeastern Africa. Only once fishers started fishing deeper and deeper was this species discovered. Before that time, this entire family of fishes was only known from fossils. Coelacanths reach lengths over 6.5 feet (2 m) and are nocturnal predators. They spend daylight hours hiding in caves and other dark spaces and hunt small bony fishes, squids, and other invertebrates at night. This species is noted for its limb-like fins. The coelacanth, the Indonesian coelacanth, and the lungfishes together make up a group known as the lobe-finned fishes. Their fins are attached to short limbs rather than directly to the body like in most species. These species are the closet fish relatives to the tetrapods. In fact the lobe-finned fishes are more closely related to the tetrapods than to the other fishes. Live coelacanths have been observed using their lobed fins in a paddle-like fashion, almost as if they are walking through the water column.

The coelacanth and Indonesian coelacanth are the only two vertebrates that have a jointed skull. This adaptation apparently allows them to open their mouths wider than they would be able to otherwise, improving their predation ability. Coelacanths reproduce via internal fertilization and give birth to relatively well-developed live young. As soon as they are born, juvenile coelacanths do not receive any further parental care and are ready to begin a predatory lifestyle.”
