Antisemitism has no place in maternity services, the NHS or society.

Responding to Lord Mann's report on antisemitism in the NHS, the RCM is calling for urgent action to tackle discrimination and ensure staff and those receiving care are treated with dignity and respect.

Gill Walton, the Royal College of Midwives Chief Executive and Chief Midwife, said:

"The RCM is alarmed to see the rise of antisemitism reported by Lord Mann. Incidence is on the rise and this must be tackled urgently across the health service. There is no place for antisemitic, racist or toxic behaviour in maternity or anywhere in the NHS.

“We expect NHS employers and the regulator, the NMC, to take prompt and effective action to root it out. Staff shouldn’t have to tolerate this in their workplace and people receiving care should be able to count on kindness and respect from their healthcare professionals. The RCM stands with NHS staff campaigning for action against all forms of discrimination. This takes time, training and support and this report doesn’t go far enough in making sure this is in place.”

A Panorama programme airing this evening highlights the failures in maternity care at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Our heart goes out to the Nottingham families who lost babies and had terrible experiences of their care. We cannot let women and babies suffer avoidable harm in the future, and we have to see action from what happened there. The programme emphasised the need to listen to women, learn from errors and be willing to change practice, and this is absolutely right.

We heard in the programme from staff whistleblowers who warned that staffing was depleted, staff were exhausted, and the service ill-equipped, putting safety at risk. The Trust had miscalculated the number of midwives it needed and claimed it had no idea staffing levels were so unsafe. This isn’t just a risk in Nottingham, we’ve heard this from maternity staff across the country, and we urgently need safe staffing to provide safe care.
