Annually, D23 Annual Charity Golf Tournament commemorates a distinguished military veteran during our balloon release opening ceremony. This year, our 6th annual charity golf tournament will honor Dr. Granville C. Coggs, an original Tuskegee Airman and a prominent figure in the San Antonio community.
Dr. Granville C. Coggs, a distinguished member of the Original Tuskegee Airmen, enlisted in the U.S. Army and volunteered for the Army Air Corps in 1943 while attending Howard University. His training took place at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, the renowned center for the Tuskegee Airmen program. He earned his commission as an officer and became a second lieutenant in October 1945.
The discipline, leadership, and determination cultivated through his involvement in the Tuskegee Airmen program influenced his distinguished medical career, where he consistently broke barriers as a physician, educator, and pioneer in the field of radiology.
After earning his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and becoming a pioneering radiologist in California, Dr. Coggs eventually relocated to San Antonio, where he continued his work as a radiologist and breast cancer specialist. He is noted for establishing the San Antonio Breast Evaluation Center in the 1980s, a facility that became a model for other breast cancer diagnostic centers across the United States.
San Antonio served as his retirement residence, where he continued to actively contribute to the preservation and dissemination of the Tuskegee Airmen's history and legacy. In his later years, he was frequently acknowledged not only for his esteemed medical profession but also for his pivotal role as one of the Original Tuskegee Airmen.
