BCDI Iowa We exist to improve and advance the quality of life for Black children and families through
education, advocacy and empowerment. See less

Black Child Development Institute--Iowa (BCDI) is a village of the National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI), an organiization founded 54-years ago. The NBCDI is the only national organization focused solely on the unique attributes and needs of Black children, birth through age 8. We exist to fight for the creation of an equitable and just future for Black children and families. We mobil

ize communities and ignite movements on the strength of Black excellence. NBCDI is engaged in building the world Black children deserve to be born into. The work of building a future in which Black people exist is ours to design, and we take seriously the charge to lay the bricks and smooth the mortar to implement ideas that will change the world for Black children and families. We work to foster a sense of community and belonging, where Black children feel supported and valued. In collaboration with our national Village Network, we amplify the strengths and talents of Black children and mobilize advocates in local communities who address their needs. We also serve as a convener, bringing together advocates, practitioners, policymakers and stakeholders who share our mission. NBCDI has identified eight essential outcomes (see NBCDI.org) and BCDI--Iowa works to those ends. To build the just world our children deserve, we need the support of the community. Dr. Anita Fleming-Rife, born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, who everyone knows is a very proud Scarlet (East High School alum), founded BCDI-Iowa in the spring of 2022.

Please see the attached flyer with details regarding BCDI-Iowa's Raise a Reader luncheon. We hope that all BCDI-Iowa members will show up to celebrate our children just because they are our children. At the same time we want the children to know that reading is critical to their success. We want to convey to them that we are here to support them on their reading literacy journey.
We'll see you 2/24. The luncheon is at noon, but if any of you can come at 10 to help us set up, thank you!

BCDI-Iowa members Odessa Peake, Val James, and Anita Fleming-Rife attended United Ways Day at the Capitol. We talked to United Way members from beyond Central Iowa and DMPS school board members. United Way of Central Iowa officers/staff and others were present. I was delighted to visit with United Ways of Iowa’s new President & CEO and former school board member, Kelli Soyer. When I attended during previous years, we met with more legislators and even met with the governor one time. I guess they were too busy to meet with us this year. United Ways legislative priorities are very much aligned with BCDI-Iowa’s essential outcomes. It was a wonderful morning at the Capitol.

Jan 22 - Listening Sessions
BCDI-Iowa co-sponsored tonight’s Des Moines Public School Listening Session at King Elementary School. Thanks to King’s principal, Renita Lorde, for helping us to get the parents and community out. There were about 45 parents and community members present who voiced their concerns about math, reading, teacher’s low expectations of students, lack of support for refugee students, and a host of really good questions for the School Board member Kim Maratorano. DMPS provided a wonderful meal for those in attendance. It was especially great to hear from students who were in attendance.
