Skye Mountain Rescue Team SCIO We’re a volunteer team on call 24/7 to help folk in difficulty in Skye’s hills and remote places. We are all unpaid volunteers who love the mountains.

We work with Police Scotland and rely on donations to keep the team trained, equipped, and ready when we're needed. Skye Mountain Rescue Team has been providing assistance to walkers and climbers on the Isle of Skye 24 hours a day, 365 days a year since the 1950's. The majority of our rescues take place in the famous Cuillin mountains but we also assist with search and rescue in other parts of the island and on the Scottish mainland.

Thanks so much to everyone at EP who supported Skye Mountain Rescue in December. While learning about charities and how they help people, the pupils decided to support our team by organising a bake sale — and they raised an amazing £156. We popped down to say thanks and give the pupils a look at some of the kit. The stretcher was very popular — no shortage of volunteers to play the casualty!

Skye MRT held its Annual General Meeting last night, providing a moment to reflect on what has been the team’s busiest year on record. With over 100 incidents so far, including several multi-day searches, it has certainly been a demanding year for everyone involved. But the biggest moment of reflection came with the announcement that Neil Urquhart has stepped down as Team Leader, a role he has held since May 2018.

We believe Neil first joined the team around 1986 — though the one fact we can say with certainty is that his wife Helen joined a year before him. He became Deputy Team Leader in 2007, supporting Gerry Akroyd until his retirement in 2018, when Neil stepped into the Team Leader role.

His steady leadership has guided the team through some of its busiest and most complex periods, and over that time he has witnessed — and helped steer — a great deal of change within the team. Neil has led significant developments that have strengthened the team’s resilience as callouts continue to rise year on year, and his detailed knowledge of the Cuillin has played a vital part in countless successful rescues. Those who have been alongside him know how much his calm approach and reassuring presence have meant on long, difficult callouts — especially when the weather is foul, it’s dark, and you find yourself on some time-forgotten rake in the Cuillin.

Neil isn’t disappearing, though. He plans to remain an active member of Skye MRT, and while he’s stepping back from the leadership role, he still has a great deal to offer the team — something everyone is very grateful for. But first, he and Helen have a major adventure planned next year — a lot of walking in Patagonia, a well-earned stretch of freedom after years of helping to run one of the busiest mountain rescue teams in Scotland. He’s also got a fair few waterproofs to make before they can go!

Stepping up as the new Team Leader is James “Paddy” Stephenson, previously Deputy Team Leader, with Ben Wear taking on the Deputy role. Having learnt the ropes from Neil, both are well placed to lead the team forward and ensure Skye MRT remains in a strong position for the years ahead.

The team extends its wholehearted thanks to Neil.

Missing Hillwalker, Bla Bheinn- Update from Skye MRT

Skye Mountain Rescue Team can confirm that at around 2pm on Saturday 8th November a body was found on the cliffs of the west face of Clach Glas.

Due to the challenging location, the body was recovered the following day with assistance from Kintail Mountain Rescue Team, Glenelg Mountain Rescue Team, the Police Scotland (Highland) Mountain Rescue Team, and the HM Coastguard helicopter R948.

Formal identification has now taken place, and the body has been confirmed as that of Matthias Beutin, 57. His family has been informed.

We would like to thank all those who have supported the search over the past month, including the Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Team (RAF MRT), the Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA), the Search and Rescue Aerial Association (SARAA), HM Coastguard helicopter R851, and drone operators from the Lake District mountain rescue teams for their kind offer of assistance. Volunteers from Skye Mountain Rescue Team have committed over 800 hours across to the search, and combined efforts from all mountain rescue teams exceed 1,700 hours.

We are grateful to everyone who has given their time and effort to support the search and recovery.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

Last few copies available!

Here’s a great way to support Skye Mountain Rescue Team this Christmas 👇

Our friend and supporter Andrew Tobin Photographer has just 60 copies left of his stunning book Skye at Night — a photographic celebration of the Isle of Skye under the stars.

Skye at Night is the result of five years of late nights and long hikes, with Andy out in all weathers capturing the island after dark — glowing auroras, star-filled skies, the Cuillin silhouetted in moonlight plus plus some good-looking MRT types posing with a pickup. As you can imagine, it’s packed with incredible images and plenty of familiar local faces.👌

Since launching the book last year, 1,000 copies have already been sold, raising an amazing £6,000 for the team so far. If the remaining books sell before Christmas, that’ll add another £600 to support the team’s work.

Andy isn’t planning another print run, so once they’re gone — that’s it!

Order directly from https://www.lens57.com/skye-at-night
to make sure more of the proceeds come to SkyeMRT

Update from Skye MRT

Search efforts for missing walker Matthias Beutin have continued this week whenever weather conditions have allowed, with smaller groups heading out between breaks in the weather. Matthias was last seen on Thursday 9th October 2025, and searches have been carried out regularly since then as conditions permit.

Last weekend’s team training was postponed in the hope that a full team search could take place this weekend, but the forecast of high winds, low cloud, and rain means that’s unlikely to be possible.

So far, Skye MRT volunteers have given over 500 hours to the search — not including the significant time and support from Glenelg, Kintail, SARDA, SARAA, RAF, and Police MRT teams, as well as Coastguard helicopters. We continue to work closely with Police Scotland as the search progresses.

All of this work is carried out by volunteers giving their time to help others, and we’re deeply grateful for the continued support and encouragement we’ve received from the local community on Skye and from many others further afield.

Efforts will continue as conditions allow, and our thoughts remain with Matthias’s family throughout this difficult time.

Big shout-out to Mark and Alison at Amy's Place Cakes & Gift Shop in Torrin, for supporting the team and keeping us fuelled with some award-winning cakes and caffeine. These guys also look after our pals in the other emergency services, so a huge thanks for all you do to keep everyone going.
Unfortunately, it’s their last day of the season today — so you’ll have to be very quick or wait until next March to get your hands on their amazing bakes again. Thanks for all the treats and support this year! 👏

Missing Walker – Blaven

It’s now Saturday evening, and after another full day of searching there’s still no sign of Matthias.

Teams were out again today — including Search & Rescue Dog Association (Scotland) , Kintail Mountain Rescue , and Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Service — covering more ground in challenging terrain and poor visibility.

If you were on Blaven or around Loch Slapin on Thursday, and may have seen Matthias, or have dash-cam footage or photos from the area, please get in touch — even the smallest detail could help.

📞 Contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 2588 of 9 October.

A big thank you to Mrs Mack's Farm Shop for providing burgers to those involved in the search and for their generous cash donation to the team after their daughter’s London Marathon run.🤗

Thanks also to Kirsty Watt, who brought along two containers of homemade biscuits — very much appreciated by everyone out on the hill today.🥰

Missing Walker – Blaven

We’re concerned for a walker who may have been on Blaven today (Thursday 9th).

Brown over-trousers
Walking alone

He likely set off around 11:00 from the JMC car park, heading for the summit and back.

If you were on Blaven today and may have seen him, please call Police on 101 with any information.

Please share this post to help spread the word.

Team training this weekend took us onto the NW face of Sgùrr a’ Mhadaidh. A few wet and greasy sections kept things interesting (and gave us a chance to break out some rope-work!). We finished off with a traverse of the Mhadaidh tops, with the weather getting better as we went — not a bad way to spend a Sunday. Bonus points for the team colour coordination — almost Instagram ready!
